Since my daughter is back in school. I've turned attention towards myself and pursuing a Trucking career.

I have been accepted to Swift's Training program. The closest Academy is Richmond. Though, I'm also thinking of Phoenix. I have family out there. My wife and I have thought about moving to Phoenix. I'm not set on a particular campus, and it's really a minor detail in the scope of things.

Next step is Med card and Permit.

The good thing is that the medical practice I go to, has a DOTME on staff. I'm working with them on a healthier me. I have crept up in weight in the last 5 years, I've gained 30. Good news is that I've lost 15 pounds of those already since beginning of August. I'm feeling much better.

Monday, I plan to run to the DMV and pick up a copy of the Manual. I would like an actual copy of it, to make notations etc. I will ,also, start TT high road online program too.

With that said, I would like to thank all the Mods and active members for such a great community and the wealth of information on TT. I look forward to your insight and sharing my future experiences.

DOT:

Department Of Transportation

A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.

State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.

Dm:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

DMV:

Department of Motor Vehicles, Bureau of Motor Vehicles

The state agency that handles everything related to your driver's licences, including testing, issuance, transfers, and revocation.

HOS:

Hours Of Service

HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.

Bullitt, it's great if you want the CDL manual, but the whole thing is built right into the High Road CDL Training Program.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

The important parts of the manual are consistent (there same) across every state. The High Road Program will work for you, even though it is built on Illinois, I think.

Keep this diary going. I went though the Swift Academy in Memphis about 5 years ago. Things have changed a bit, but you can read my diary here.

In Pennsylvania the manual is only available on-line I tried to get one at Dublin DMV. Think you can buy a copy on Amazon if you really feel the need to.

G-Town - Thank You! I had conversation on Friday with recruiter, I didn't settle on start date yet. I'm hoping between Columbus Day and 1st of November. I wanted to talk to wife first. She's a Girl Scout leader and she is away camping with her troop this weekend.

Joe - Ok, then. I'll stick with online, and the program on here.

The main thing is to use the tools available and adjust.

Exciting times!

Couple of thoughts:

Seek Swift’s advice on the DOT medical exam. They use Concentra; nearest one to you is Norristown on Germantown Pike.

Unless something has changed; Richmond teaches for 4 states; PA, VA, NC & SC. Phoenix may not accept you because of your PA residence.

Let my know when you want to ride with me for a day, weekends are best, more flexibility.
