I trained at FedEx freight. My first tractor was a 2006 Volvo with just under a million miles. The general consensus between students and instructors is that it's a piece of junk. The reason that's the first tractor is because it's on its last legs and it's perfectly fine for practicing on private property and we're expected to be hard on the gears since we don't know what we're doing.
By the time I hit the street I was in a 2006 Volvo with about 700,000 miles on it. It was in better condition mechanically and the gears were tighter.
By my state test week I was in a 2006 Volvo with 500,000 miles on it that was in great condition and the shifting was much easier. That's the tractor I tested in.
The thought process was let them learn on what we're what were about to get rid of. Let them practice on the next yard truck and then we have the test truck that's for the state test. They're all 2006 Volvo's so that there are no surprises on the pretrip and everything is where you remember it being when you're on the street. No need to look for it.
