Hey all. I am wanting to get into the truck driving industry. I have done a lot of research and had applied to multiple places. I had decided on TMC trucking for their CDL training, and have been accepted by them.

I was watching some videos on YouTube today about their physical assessment during orientation, and one of the guys mentioned that they have you balance on each leg for 30 seconds. I can do this no problem on any left leg, but due to me not being able to control the toes in my right foot (since birth), i cannot balance for very long on my right.

I was wondering if this a requirement for most trucking companies? I have reached out to my recruiter at TMC but have not heard back from him.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

I cannot recall ever having to stand on only one leg, as a company required test nor during the DOT physical. Different companies can have their own set of requirements as they see fit, though, so it could just be "a TMC thing".

I would call a recruiter there with this specific question.

DOT:

Department Of Transportation

A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.

State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.

Will you be going through their school at Columbia or Iowa? I did a two week orientation at Columbia and we didn’t even balance on our legs. We had to pick up both tarps climb a 15 foot ladder get off climb back down jump up onto the flatbed even though it’s against company policy. Lol. It was very casual and laid back

Iowa. From what I've read, all new driver CDL trainees go to Iowa ... I'm not positive wether that is for sure though. I live in Virginia.

Are you still with them? How are you like driving for them?

Thank you for the response!

I called and left him a message earlier today, he has not gotten back to me yet.

I got my DOT physical today, and did not need to do it. TMC does flat bed trailers, which I think is why they might do that. I found a comment from a few years back on here while searching from someone who was hired for Roelh's flat bed division and they had to do it (or maybe it was just a balance beam), but those who did dry and reefer did not need to.

Reefer:

A refrigerated trailer.

HOS:

Hours Of Service

HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.

I’m still training. They are a great company. They definitely do cdl training at Columbia I talked to the students. I’d push for that personally
