RV transport is another thing I was looking at.

Might want to look again. There is simply way too much competition out there to make RV transport a viable option.

One of my wife's family members tried it. Bought a brand new Chevy dually and hit the road toting RVs all over the country. 3 years later the truck is broken down, has 450k miles on it with practically no resale value, and still costs him $700 a month. He finally gave up and now drives a rig for Logistics One to get himself out of debt.

Thank you

Thank you

I looked into that as a possible income after retiring.

Like Old School, I am a previous business owner, and my research found that it looked like a quick way to go broke, and I was only looking at class A motorhomes where the only investment was a car to tow.

I just got out of cdl school and one or two of the other guys were considering it but the instructors in the know talked them out of it fairly quick. You don’t have a sleeper cab so it’s either a hotel or be very uncomfortable after a few days Most Passenger truck seats are not meant for prolonged use like semi seats

You are still subject to HOS regulations and will have to get an elog

Besides for equipment, insurance, fuel, maintenance you are also responsible for tolls, etc.

Is there a reason that you would prefer to do this or God forbid lease than being a company driver? Is the pride of having your name on the door worth it? Ask most anyone , the money just isn’t there.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Elog:

Electronic Onboard Recorder

Electronic Logbook

A device which records the amount of time a vehicle has been driven. If the vehicle is not being driven, the operator will manually input whether or not he/she is on duty or not.

HOS:

Hours Of Service

HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.

I too was thinking of hot shot car hauling. Looked like a fun gig and one gets to see the country.

However, from all the valuable comments here it appears the money is just not there given the expense burden. Plus, I would end up dragging way too much home to my own shop ;)
