Hello, I plan on applying to a few company sponsored CDL schools in the next month, However I will be moving from CA to AZ and wondered if I should wait to apply once I Make my move to AZ as I will need a Permit from my home state I believe. Any insight anyone can provide would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

I would wait until you have moved and have an AZ license. I'm not sure if permits transfer with your license. Waiting until you're moved and licensed in AZ will also help ensure you're in the hiring area of the company you're going to. Many times the hiring areas temporarily change based on how many drivers they already employ in a certain area and what the freight level is in that region.

When are you moving? Your Carrier will want you to have a CDL from the state you are domiciled.

If you move will be soon then I would wait.

Swift and Knight both have schools in Phoenix, AZ. If you are looking at them, it might be just better to wait.

Thanks all for your answers, I plan on moving end of March beginning of April. I will wait and get all my stuff transferred over from CA to AZ. I’m hoping to get on with Prime but we will see what is available in the area when the time comes. Thanks again! 👍🏼
