Hey Mike B. I'm glad your training with Wiley Sanders wasn't cancelled by the COVID. I love reading the training diaries as I prepare to start my career in trucking in 5 years. Good luck and keep us posted during your journey. Tortuga
Well short diary I didn't pass my road I need a refresher but dont know how I am going to afford it. I'm screwed
Well that's a bummer! Can you try one of the bigger companies that offer refresher for CDL holders? I know I've read on the trucking company reviews that some offer that. Well unless Wiley Sanders is a local company and you would rather do that than OTR. I'm still a greenhorn at all of this so really don't know more than that. Maybe if you ask in the general discussion section I'm sure one of the experienced guys or gals can give you some better advice that I.
A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:
OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.

What kind of course is Wiley offering, Mike B.? Sounds positive, hope it works for you.

Another 160 class, at your expense?!? Oh my. This: (below) is from THEIR website. What went wrong?!?!?!? More details will help us, help YOU!
If you’re a CDL driver with less than 6 months’ experience, and a truck driver school graduate, we offer the opportunity to drive with an experienced driver for 10 weeks. During this time you’ll be compensated at rates among the most competitive in the industry for trainees. Afterward, when you’re ready, you’ll be assigned a truck of your own and receive regular pay and all other benefits.

They dont have a course I need to go back to s cdl school for a refresher course. I haven't driven an 18 wheeler in 5 years. I couldn't remember anything.

Mike B. - from what I've read on here, needing to re-do basic training after even much less time than 5 years away is more the rule than the exception.
There's companies that will pay at least part way, possibly all through the training process (many to check out on this site).
I recall that you wrote you were excited about the job and had a positive start to orientation. It's a great career, more than ever.
with your next steps!
I'm excited about the journey I just need to find a company to pay for class refresher classes. I have literally no money

So I started orientation with Wiley Sanders in Troy AL. On monday. The hotel provided breakfast then we were shuttled to the terminal and of course a crapload of paper work. Then we took a field trip over to thy he Dr.s office for drug test and physical. They provided lunch then the lectures started. We got done around 5. Tuesday was hazmat mostly. Today was defensive driving and insurances and direct deposit. Tomorrow we have a road test which I am nervous about because I haven't driven a truck in 5 years. The cool thing is they also provide dinner. This place wants you to succeed. They stress if you dont feel safe driving due to fatigue, illness or dangerous weather then dont drive. I will update yall on tomorrow
HAZMAT:
Hazardous Materials
Explosive, flammable, poisonous or otherwise potentially dangerous cargo. Large amounts of especially hazardous cargo are required to be placarded under HAZMAT regulations
Terminal:
A facility where trucking companies operate out of, or their "home base" if you will. A lot of major companies have multiple terminals around the country which usually consist of the main office building, a drop lot for trailers, and sometimes a repair shop and wash facilities.
