As a break from the Coronavirus news that has dominated the news cycle, social media, and pretty much every other communication, I thought a game about your perfect driving song would be nice. And this is not to start a debate about which is THE perfect driving song. Rather, its the perfect song for YOU. Each person will have his or her couple of songs or just that one song that when it comes on the radio, all cares, worries, and anxieties fade away. For those 3, 4, or 5 minutes, its just you, the truck (motorcycle or car), the road, and with that steering wheel turning in your hand, you are absorbed in and at peace with God's creation.
I know from listening to Brett's podcasts, Roll Me Away by Bob Seeger motivated him when he began his driving career. Turn the Page is another good one by Bob Seeger. I can think of many more driving/traveling themed songs. Life is a Highway by Tom Cochrane (or Rascal Flatts cover) is a good one. (Get your Kicks on) Route 66 first performed by Nat King Cole is another good one. I listened to Driving my Life Away by Eddie Rabbit last night. I could go on.
I have many but if I had to pick just one song it would be Fly Over States by Jason Aldean. When I hear those first few notes, I try to turn up the volume before the first hard guitar strum and I usually sing along.
BTW, I have to give credit to Kearsey, one of my mentors, as the inspiration for this thread.
Drivin' all night, my hands wet on the wheel.....
If It's the Last Thing I Do . . .
Being married to a trucker, (and having diesel on my mind!) I can't pick only one, ya know~!!
My tastes may be a little unconventional, but as a mediocre guitar player myself, I'm fascinated by guitar greats from Setzer to Segovia.
I can sit and drive for hours on end while listening to such music, completely at peace with myself in my own little world.
It's nearly impossible to pick one over the other, but if I had to pick a favorite it would be Tommy Emmanuel, a virtual unknown in popular circles. And this would be my favorite song of his:
Not your flavor?
Hmm, how bout another of my favs, one perhaps more fitting, at least in title.
The best I ever heard was a version of Big Rock Candy Mountain, sung by a Driver (great voice) over the CB. He changed the lyrics to include DOT Officers, HOS regs and making it home. We were outside Greenville, SC in a backup so I got to hear him sing the whole song. This guy was so good I thought there must be a professional version, but I’ve had no luck finding one.
😎 Be safe! 😎
A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.
State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.
Sadly I wouldnt know, the shop put an Intelligent Speed Adapter on my truck and replaced the windshield 2 days ago and I haven't picked up a station longer than a few minutes since... :-(
Anne,
On a trip to Disney World on Spring Break several years ago I had to drive through all through the night because I didn't reserve hotel room (my wife will never let me live it down).
After everyone fell asleep at about 1:00 a.m., I drove the next four hours with Radar Love playing in my head.
"No more speed I'm almost there,
Gotta stay cool, now gotta take care,
Last car to pass here I go . . . "
Finally found a hotel over the border in Florida after driving 800 miles.
Highway Song by Blackfoot
Or...
Highway Star by Deep Purple
I'd vote Dave Dudley-Six Days on the Road and White Line Fever

Turtle,
This is a beautiful version of that song. Shows me a different side of Turtle, the former flatbedder, Top Tier Driver.
