I’m a little over halfway done with my mentor and was curious how it works with getting your own truck after you upgrade. Can you pick the make of the truck, if you prefer a certain make over others? In the cdl academy we were in freightliner and now in the mentor phase I’m in a KW. Definitely would prefer a freightliner or Volvo just because of the better turning radius. Just didn’t know if I could ask for a certain make/color or anything like that. Or if I would just be at the mercy of what they assign me

CDL:

  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Josh, when I upgraded to solo at Swift about seven months ago, my DM assigned me a truck for my first dispatch. It was a 2017 Freightliner. After about six weeks it was having electrical problems. So, my DM assigned me a brand new 2020 Cascadia. I was hoping for a Volvo because of their interior layout, and I hear that they have a smooth ride. But, I am not complaining. The Freightliner has been good. I hear that Freightliners are the most reliable and that parts are easy to find. If I have any complainst about it, it would be that the air dams are too low and scrape on things, and I hate the radio and cb antennas being molded into the roof. Reception is bad. Bottom line is, I think what ever is available at your upgrade location. If there is more than one available, you might have choices. I am also told that if your only choice is something used, to take the oldest one because you will probably be upgraded to a brand new one soon. If you pick something only one or two years old, you might have to keep that one for awhile.

Dm:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

My DM gave me a short list(2) of available and ready trucks I could look at and choose from. And another person that I went thru the Swift academy with and got done with her Mentor, different DM, just assigned her one. I suppose it's all in who your DM is.

OOS:

When a violation by either a driver or company is confirmed, an out-of-service order removes either the driver or the vehicle from the roadway until the violation is corrected.
