I'm a convicted felon who is looking for a flatbedding/specialized company in Washington state that has intrastate/regional runs that would hire a rookie driver fresh outta CDL school. Any info is greatly appreciated.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Regional:

Regional Route

Usually refers to a driver hauling freight within one particular region of the country. You might be in the "Southeast Regional Division" or "Midwest Regional". Regional route drivers often get home on the weekends which is one of the main appeals for this type of route.

Intrastate:

The act of purchasers and sellers transacting business while keeping all transactions in a single state, without crossing state lines to do so.

The felony will prevent being hired at some companies but there are plenty that will give you a shot. A lot of it comes down to what the nature of the charge was, how long ago and how long you've been out/off parole. Here is a list of Companies that hire felons. Do you already have CDL? How long ago did you get it? If flatbed interests you they typically keep you regional because many get you home every weekend. You mentioned specialized & to my knowledge, you'll have to work your way up into that field. I'd recommend getting in with any flatbed company that'll give you a shot, even if it isn't in flatbedding. That way you can gain the much needed experience & a positive track record for someone to take a chance on you. Most specialized companies I researched required a minimum of 2 years flatbed/securement experience before they'd consider your application. Always remember that once you're in the drivers seat, it's up to you to remain focused on the ultimate goal & not letting other people's stupid actions cause you to ruin a great opportunity. I have a record but it was from my teenage years & Prime gave me a shot. Good luck on your journey.

Thanks you guys. I haven't been released yet, though I'm waiting for a decision by the board now. I'm hoping to be home by Halloween. I'll be attending Bates Technical, as they're the only PTDI school in Washington. My crime was armed robbery and assault, back in '97. I'll be on parole for awhile, that's why I'm looking for a local so company.
