And I could rattle off a list of 100 plus things many drivers do that momentarily distract from driving.

Sure, distractions are sometimes unavoidable. But there's a time and place for everything, and the middle of a corner on a back road is not that time or place. That's the "real issue", and it can't be explained away. Your friend got lucky, as did whoever was in that car. I hope he learns something from this.
