Had First Scare

Had my first scare Wednesday night coming out of Austin, Tx into Round Rock during rush hour. I was in the middle lane going about 50-55 mph and slowing down some because of the traffic flow. A lady in a suburban comes out behind me and gets in the hammer lane and punched it and she gets to the back of my trailer and the left lane is slowing down quick. She slams her brakes and I hear her tires squeal and look in my mirror and watch her bounce off of my tandems. Scariest thing I have had happen to me out here. All I could think and while I watched her hit my tandems was I think the second fast and furious movie when they are racing down the interstate weaving in and out of 18 wheelers and one of the cars bounces off one semis tandems and goes underneath the one next to it and the tandems go up and over the car. Anyways once she hit which it shook the trailer pretty good but I stayed in my lane and started slowing down more and was able to hit my turn signal and get all the way over to the shoulder. Needless to say I was ok and uninjured and so was the person that hit me. Their suburban not so much tho. I was not cited and the blame was placed all on the lady that hit me. I got a call early in the afternoon Thursday from her insurance asking for my account of the accident and they also said they were taking full responsibility for accident. My truck and trailer were not damaged at all, the only thing that happened was that it knocked my turn signal out of the seal on the side of the trailer and just had to pop it back in. Which it is hard to do when your hands are shaking and heart racing an hour after the accident. This lady was vary fortunate that she just hit my tandems and bounced off and didn't get sucked under the trailer.

I do say a big thanks to my fellow drivers at the time that were going by because not one truck was in the right hand lane and I had several drivers call thru asking on the cb if I was ok and if I needed help. It was definently a scary moment and made me realize even more how fast something can happen out here on the road.

Tandems:

Tandem Axles

A set of axles spaced close together, legally defined as more than 40 and less than 96 inches apart by the USDOT. Drivers tend to refer to the tandem axles on their trailer as just "tandems". You might hear a driver say, "I'm 400 pounds overweight on my tandems", referring to his trailer tandems, not his tractor tandems. Tractor tandems are generally just referred to as "drives" which is short for "drive axles".

Certainly glad everyone is ok!

I know exactly what scene you're talking about in that movie. Thank God nothing insane like that happened!

Ernie- yes it was very scary and you can't go with your first reaction especially going through rush hour up 35 where I was at, which was to swerve and try and avoid it. I had cars all around me it would have made it 100 times worse. I just had to let them hit me and hope it wasn't going to be bad which it wasn't.

Brett- I'm glad too nothing insane like it happened. I've been out here on my own a few short months and I've seen stuff I hope I'm never in or happens to me.

Logan, you handled that perfectly....I decided, after driving demo derby for a few years, that being hit ain't all that bad...and its preferable to running into the ditch to avoid it. So my motto is..bring it on...you can run into me, but I won't run over something else to avoid you. If you don't believe me, ask that hog up in KY smile.gif
