Hi everyone. I am new here. I would like to say thank you this site has been very helpful. My husband and I are currently in school, he is working on getting his CDL , I have mine (I started before him) and I am fine tuning my backing up, I know it will be a while before I can say I know how to. we have to decide which company we want to go with (not an easy decision) and training we would like to team drive. We also have 9 and counting grandchildren. And I would like to know the best way to stay in touch with them. Is it best to use my cell phone and video chat or the computer Skype. Also if anyone has an opinion on phone companies. Which one has the best coverage, and rates, does the trucks have internet for personal use? Thank you in advance.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

I should have posted this in the general forum. Not sure if I can move it.

Hi Brinda........Welcome to TT! I can only help you a little. Verizon seems to have the widest coverage and a choice by many, but you will have to talk to them and see which plan works best for you. Your best bet to keep in touch is by cell, and if you have a smart phone there are several apps you can download to video chat. One is Tango, and of course you can Skype on a cell also. As far as internet service IN the trucks, I'm going to say no, but you can connect by WiFi at Truck Stops for a fee. And of course I have seen some places such as coffee shops and McDonald's offer WiFi.

As far as Companies to work for, you will have to decide what company works for you and your husband. You can go to How To Choose A Company , Trucking Companies. Also, you can copy your question here, go to General and paste ....that will be easier than trying to retype everything. Once you post there, you will have a lot of suggestions and ideas from others.

Hope I could help at least a little. Good luck and let us know how you are coming along. You will enjoy this site A LOT!!! There are a lot of very helpful folks here.

OOS:

When a violation by either a driver or company is confirmed, an out-of-service order removes either the driver or the vehicle from the roadway until the violation is corrected.

Yup...for about all things trucking, Verizon is the very best...if you have an old free everything contract with Verizon, DON"T UPDATE IT !!! Cuz you won't get free everything !!! But they do have great ways to link your phone and laptop for WIFI...and such...I"m electronically challenged, so you will get your best answers on the general forum.... But come on back in here...This forum is for ladies, lady drivers, ladies wondering about trucking, ladies wanting to become drivers, and ladies who have questions that they would rather have their mouth stitched shut, than ask the question on the general forum...( everytime I think about Special K and her BOB post....good grief)...anyway....ask what ya want....the guys do lurk here, and sometimes they will help answer a query...but they are ALWAYS gentlemen...cuz they know that coming into a women's camp with nothing but a smart mouth is a good way to possibly escape with your life, but not your dignity....rofl-3.gif
