I have been through almost all of the High Road CDL training. I will finish it in the next day or so. I have had a 98% average with 5 halts. The one section that I still do not feel like I have a grasp on is the pre trip inspection. I can read it a hundred times but it just seems like the Charlie Brown teacher, "Wa WAAA WAAA!" When I finished the questions, I still feel like I have no clue how to do the pre trip inspection.

At school, do they drill the pre trip in your head? Can I learn it in three weeks to get through my CDL test? I am normally a very confident person and this one are is making me fell not so confident. Suggestions? Comments.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

It will make a whole lot more sense when you are actually standing in front of the truck, can see the different parts and have them explained to you and have the pretrip demonstrated. Any CDL school worth its salt will have you practicing pretrip daily.

one method I used with some success , Every time I had 30 mins or so I would get out a paper and pen and write down one identifying word of each piece or step in the same order each time from my memory. then check it against the correct list. I would place the ones I missed in the margin close to where it fit in the order then circle it several times to make it stand out.I would do this on a daily basis till it all fell into place in proper order. soon I had it done and could do it in my mind with no paper,I found this very helpful. I consider the Pre trip to be the most important thing you will learn for every day use in every Truck Driving job.I now even pre trip my cars before I drive. good luck at roehl .

Absolutely! Do not be concerned whatsoever. The pre-trip inspection section of the High Road Training Program only covers the basics of the inspection. There will be a few questions about it on your CDL permit exam so you do have to complete that section. But that isn't meant to teach you everything you'll need to know for the final pre-trip inspection exam. It's only the basics for your permit. When you begin your schooling you will have the pre-trip drilled in your head repeatedly. By the time you have to take the actual CDL exam you'll be saying that stuff in your sleep.

Now you can also use our pre-trip inspection study guide to help study the materials also. But again, this tool is a supplement to what your school will be teaching you. So don't feel like you have to learn how to do an actual inspection from our materials. You'll learn it all at school.

Pre-trip Inspection:

A pre-trip inspection is a thorough inspection of the truck completed before driving for the first time each day.

Federal and state laws require that drivers inspect their vehicles. Federal and state inspectors also may inspect your vehicles. If they judge a vehicle to be unsafe, they will put it “out of service” until it is repaired.

Yap, the flash cards are located at that link. They're part of the Pre-Trip Inspection Study Guide.
