Just join the day cab gang and get rid of the sleeper all together and you won't have to worry! No remembering to change your status or having a DOT officer following you back from the urinal to make sure your hands are clean and that you are in the proper status.

I agree with this post.

Day Cab:

A tractor which does not have a sleeper berth attached to it. Normally used for local routes where drivers go home every night.

DOT:

Department Of Transportation

A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.

State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.

OTR:

Over The Road

OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.

Especially those guys pulling doubles. They can't even handle a big trailer. And to make it worse they can't even back it! I've pulled bigger trailers with my minivan!

On a serious note I drove past a XPO daycabber that lost his rear about 4am. Cab and lead trailer were on the shoulder, dolly and rear trailer were on its side in the right lane. It was only a couple miles south of the Flying J on I-35 by US 20 so I'm guessing he stopped and someone thought it'd be funny to mess with his equipment. Banks and Bobcat how does your company handle an incident like that?

Doubles:

Refers to pulling two trailers at the same time, otherwise known as "pups" or "pup trailers" because they're only about 28 feet long. However there are some states that allow doubles that are each 48 feet in length.

FedEx calls it a preventable, possibly a DOT preventable. They make it very clear that you're responsible for inspecting your equipment for tampering anytime you leave it unattended.

And for your information, I've been practicing backing 53 ft trailers these past few months and I've gotten a lot better

I've been doing the exact same thing going on five years! Some days, it appears that I'm backing doubles.

For the tail trailer AND the dolly to be detached from the lead that means that not only would the pintle hook have been released but the safety chains also. Weird. I would assume the driver is out of Des Moines.

Man these are the things I need to learn the mst right now!! My trainer says we’re gonna keep goin over it more and more that I can always call him to if I get stuck on something thanks for all the input on this thread needed it!!!

This happened to my friend. She parked and while walking into the truck stop, DOT stopped her and said, "After you take care of your needs we will be doing an inspection."

He specifically told her he was looking for "sleeper instead of off duty" knowing drivers illegally do 8/2 splits. It is considered falsification of logs if you are caught. That type of ticket can keep you from getting a job you really want.

This also happened to one of our forum members when he did not log on duty for fueling. The officer gave him a ticket which gave him CSA points for 3 years and kept him.from getting the local job he wanted.

I am not saying people dont cut corners with off duty vs sleeper.... But you arent supposed to. Even sitting in the passenger seat eating cereal is supposed to be off duty.... Because sleeper would be behind the curtain. This is how a DOT officer explained it to me.

Day cabs are the real truckers the first trucks didn't have those fancy swanky sleepers just throw a piece of ply wood across the front seat and that was your bunk! If we get stuck out someplace we sleep vertically in our seats like real men, not on a 5 star mattress.

Backing is overrated, that's why God invented spotters, so we wouldn't have to.

If it rolled going down the ramp ours are designed to break free from the lead so the cab doesn't get pulled over with it. If it came off on the ramp and rolled that is odd as we have a latch that comes out and grabs onto the dolly tongue when you open the valve at the rear of the trailer.

That's a good idea. When I have enough seniority to have a bid tractor, I'm throwing a piece of plywood in there.

Our trailers have the ram that secures the dolly in place as well. It's hard to say what happened with that set without knowing specifics, but XPO doesn't have the greatest reputation when it comes to their equipment.

So that's how she lures them. I'd be a sucker for a 6 star mattress as well so I can't fault them.

EPU:

Electric Auxiliary Power Units

Electric APUs have started gaining acceptance. These electric APUs use battery packs instead of the diesel engine on traditional APUs as a source of power. The APU's battery pack is charged when the truck is in motion. When the truck is idle, the stored energy in the battery pack is then used to power an air conditioner, heater, and other devices
