I'm pretty sure there is a good truckers atlas that most drivers have. Also there are apps that show truck stops and things like that. The truckers GPS probably has info as well. I'm sure the drivers out there will post the actual names of the products and be more insightful than myself. I've seen quite a few products while watching youtube trucking videos.
Yeah, most truck stop parking lots fill up in a big way after dinner time or into the early evening. Finding parking is one of the most difficult challenges you'll face out there - it really throws a wrench in the gears sometimes.
There are books at truck stops that list all of the truck stops. There are also some apps out there which are quite honestly really awful and inaccurate which is why I have my own truck stop app coming out in a few weeks. I've done some testing with it here on the site in the past and it's about ready to go. I'll be making announcements about it when the time comes.
But the books they sell at truck stops do a good job.
The major brand truck stops (Pilot/Flying J, Loves, TA/Petro, and Wilco) almost always fill up right around dinner time as Brett said. The smaller ones usually don't fill up until later. This was my experience in my crash course in otr driving.
OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.
So Brett, if I wanted to be a tester for your TS locator what would a poor rookie like me have to do?
Oh yeah, Truck stops fill up super fast. Especially in California, I run the Western 11 and make sure to always be done driving 4:00 PM MST. The only applications I use is my GPS but I always looking for a Pilot, Flying J and Loves. You can still find spots later in the evening but I avoid do such a thing because normally you stuck behind everyone trying to find a spot, everyone trying to back in at the same time and sometimes you find a truck stop with hard to back spots with trucks pulled out further then they should, other trucks parked crooked. All these thinks can make it difficult when trying to back into your spot.
So Brett, if I wanted to be a tester for your TS locator what would a poor rookie like me have to do?
I'll be making announcements about it here in the forum. The remainder of this week and into next week will be dedicated to the iPhone version of the CDL Practice Tests and then I'll be working on the truck stop app. So it'll be probably two or three weeks before I have a version for testing and the first version will be the Android version.

Man, I am absolutely relentless when it comes to working on this site. I average about 60-70 hours per week and haven't missed a single day in almost 4 years. And I don't mean weekdays...I mean seven days a week. Sunday mornings - workin. Christmas morning - workin. Day after day, year after year - I'm here working at it because I just truly enjoy it so much and I know how badly it's needed.
I loved my years on the road and I know how badly new drivers need good advice and guidance to steer them in the right direction. And with the utter lack of good quality, honest information out there I feel like it's pretty much up to me and a special group of friends here in the forum to help clear the fog, eliminate the negativity, and prepare people for the challenges that lie ahead.
Even after years of working on this site I never have less than about 6-12 months worth of projects on my to-do list. In fact, I think that list gets longer over time. There's just so much information to cover and so many things that we can do to help prepare people for getting their career off to a great start. The hardest part is figuring out what to work on next!
But I love it. This site is a ton of fun and I'll be doing this for many, many years to come!
Brett...I get that you spend ALOT of time on this site....but theres others that depend on you....
Have you hugged your chickens today ??
