Hello Is it true that you have to have 160 hours of truck driving school training to get hired? (Uninsurable in the company's eyes) I hope this isn't true! It would sure make a CDL expensive! Thanks for your time.
I know the company I am going with said we needed 160 hours of cdl training before being hired.. As for everyone I dont know that. Maybe you can get away with just getting a CDL with a local job or a mom and pop shop. Maybe someone else can chime in on that part. I just know with my own experience with the company I chose requires it.
A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:
160 hours is pretty standard from what I've researched. I'm sure there are smaller companies out there or a Mom & Pop outfit like Christopher H. mentioned that might take you on less. Standard cost on private school can range from a couple thousand to around $7000.00. $5000 seems to be the average, depending on where you live. Of course, you have the companies that will help you earn your CDL for 'free' if you stay employed with them for a certain amount of time. In my opinion, Prime Inc. has the best program for company paid schooling. They offer a high pay rate, if not the highest, during training ($600 weekly). And they only ask for one year commitment.

Basically the schools that most companies hire from range for 160 hours to 300 hours. Anything less than 160 hours and most trucking companies insurance will not allow you to be hired
