If you're attending a school out of state you may wind up having to transfer your license to the state you're training in temporarily which would mean retaking the permit exam. But that's no tragedy. Otherwise, I can't think of a reason not to get your permit and endorsements before beginning truck driving school. Anyone that comes back here reporting on how things progress through their training are always thrilled that they have all of that out of the way and can relax while the rest of the class struggles, crams, and stresses over learning the materials and passing the tests.
So my advice has always been to get everything before you begin school if you have the time.
I think the person that was waiting on the Hazmat said the company would pay for it or they didn't have time to get it because they were waiting on the background check or something. I can't remember. I'm getting tired and my brain is getting foggy. But there was a reason, I just can't remember it now.

Thanks so much Brett for the quick and helpful reply. You are appreciated!!
I recently took all my written tests. I will not be starting school until end of April but now I know I will not have to worry about the written tests, I intend to focus on learning as much in school for passing the pre-trip, air brakes, road test... and of course ACTUAL truck driving.
I would not see any reason to not take ALL the written tests as soon as you feel you have studied enough and are ready.

Is there any reason not to take the written portion of the CDL test along with all the endorsements before attending a CDL school?
I saw one post indicating that he/she was not going to seek the HAZMAT endorsement until after obtaining their CDL. Why not???
