Pack Rat,
They were heavy steel! My company would remove them after winter was over, steam clean and repaint for the next winter. The bottom tubes were a heavy type of rubber and sometimes dragged the ground, broke off or deformed so replace them too. We carried full tanks and sometimes 4-8 extra 50-100# bags of sand or rock salt. A real pain but a savior in a slippery situation.
The only time I get eyes on these is on municipal/city road crew vehicles or at truck shows.
I'm going to keep my eyes peeled now for these next time I'm touring the Iowa 80 trucking museum. Maybe get some photos if I see any.
I'm really glad Mikey got that picture and posted it.
I know I'm not a trucker (yet), but I do travel a lot and take some interesting photos. I'll add a few from time to time for your enjoyment :)

That's a great one! Any backstory?

I love to get off the freeways when I go on road trips. This is Amboy, CA in 2016. Yes they are open lol My parents owned another gas station out in the middle of the desert too, so I get it. I was very happy I didn't need gas though :D
Unfortunately, that could be both a photo of the past and of the future to come IMHO.
That's still a cool picture regardless.
Somewhere near an offramp on I40 between Winslow and Flagstaff. I like to imagine that it has been there since the Rt 66 days, the whole Grapes of Wrath thing lol
Sorry the photo didn't load
lo
I’ve been the cutting across the ten to the 40 😀

YEP! I've not seen one of those in a long time. That is cheap, simple, and very effective.
Why did they mostly disappear? Not High Tech enough for this day and age?
