With the new rules one can stop their 14 hour clock with a 2/8 or 3/7.
Keeping in mind that the 2/8 or 3/7 split is a way to change how you do the 11/14 daily clock - BUT - if you're still on duty for close to the max every day, then you are still going to run into issues with re-caps.
That is, using your 11 drive clock - means that you have to log AT LEAST 11.5 hours on your 70 (On Duty) clock (for pre-trips, fueling, etc.). If DOT looks at your logs - and ALL the time is ON DUTY/DRIVING with no ON DUTY/NOT DRIVING, you could get "ding'd" for not logging pre/post/fueling correctly.
As Ted mentioned - if you keep your TOTAL ON DUTY TIME to 8.75 hours a day - you will NEVER RUN OUT OF TIME. Time Management is one of those skills that comes with EXPERIENCE - and is one of THE MOST IMPORTANT ONES TO LEARN - as you are finding out.
