Just as I'm about to begin my trucking career, I realize that my relationship with my significant other is ending. I sure do not want to pay out a bunch of money for a rental until I get something with a little more home time after 1st year. Does anyone have any ideas for a trucker to stay at a couple few days here and there. Thanks in advance for any & all ideas.

Get yourself a cheap RV and find a place to park it !! Lived in one for 2 years and it was fine for a single guy !

Well not knowing your age and what not there's is always your parents place or a sibling if your looking for somewhere to crash for a couple days on hometime. Really any family member if they will let you crash. Offer to help with groceries or bills for the days you are there to help them out too.

You will need a "permanent address"...so it will have to be someone's address. After you have that, and if you put your stuff in storage, you are free to call anywhere you stop to visit for a few days your temporary home. You can park the truck, rent a car and sight see, stay in the truck, or stay with family/friends.....But you DO have to have a permanent address somewhere, and your CDL issued in whatever state that your permanent address is in.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Travel trailer in a RV park is cheap living and its easy to up and move. I've been living in a 24' travel trailer with my girlfriend and our chihuahua for two and a half years. I do a route that has me home only two days a week. Perfect for me I pay $295 per month space rent. I plan on putting it in storage when I go OTR and living full time on the road.

OTR:

Over The Road

OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.
