It allows them to carry more weight. I believe a third axle allows up to 104,000 lbs...but don't quote me on that weight ;-)
They've been around for quite a while. I've seen 3 & 4 axles on Wilson's trucks up in the Pacific Northwest previous to when I started 7 years ago.

They’re not legal in all the states. Here we do 107k on three and 117k on four. You’ll see a ton of multi axles in Canada.

I've been seeing these trucks pulling, these trailers that have a three or four wheel base. I've seen them on dry vans, reefers. I'm curious what's the purpose for them? I've even seen Wilson Logistics have a few on their trailers. I believe our friends across the pond uses them but I've never seen them until lately over in the states.
