WEL COMPANIES has APU'S

APU:

Auxiliary Power Unit

On tractor trailers, and APU is a small diesel engine that powers a heat and air conditioning unit while charging the truck's main batteries at the same time. This allows the driver to remain comfortable in the cab and have access to electric power without running the main truck engine.

Having an APU helps save money in fuel costs and saves wear and tear on the main engine, though they tend to be expensive to install and maintain. Therefore only a very small percentage of the trucks on the road today come equipped with an APU.

Hey all. I'm VERY new to all of this, and I'm currently reading everything I can on this website about how to get into trucking, what to study, where to go, etc. I'm interested in the APU issue due to being an asthmatic. In extremely hot/humid weather I have trouble breathing, and also trouble sleeping. (I'm totally fine in frigid weather.) My only concern would be keeping the A/C in the truck going even when it's 75 degrees outside. (I can charge my phone while driving, and it can do anything my laptop can, so that's not a concern.) I'm guessing the idle time people are talking about would address this issue. I've been reading good things about Prime, Roehl, and Schneider, and since I live in VA I'm trying to figure out who would be a good company to go to. So details I would need to look for regarding this would be idle time guidelines, correct?

Thanks in advance for the help!

See if any of the companies you are interested in have tractors with an idle management system (like the "Optimized Idle" in the Freightliner Cascadia). In short this allows idle intervals that can be set with a bunk thermostat allowing the AC to be run long enough to cool your the interior of your truck to the desired temperature. It will automatically cycle on and off until you either shut it off or the outside temperature cools. The Cascadia I ran while OTR had this feature and it kept the cab/bunk cool while I was on break.

OTR:

Over The Road

OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.

OWI:

Operating While Intoxicated

Millis Transfer has an unlimited idle policy (use to have a bonus for not but did away with it). So with an inverter, fridge and now 24 inch flat screen with Direct Tv sat &NFL ticket you can set the A/C to artic and relax all you want. Awesome miles and pay plan to boot and going to automatics over the next year completely.

Wow. I shall add Millis to the list of companies I'm investigating!

Thanks Scott! I will look them up when I get home from work, and hopefully the training facility isn't too far away. I know some places want you to be within 50 miles 100 miles. I'm closer to Washington DC than any of the more rural areas. I really appreciate the advice! Thanks!

Scott I couldn't find anthing about the VA training facility on the mobile site. I'll look again on a real computer. But so you know where it is? Also, do they have a pet policy? It's not a deal breaker, but I would love a place that would allow me to have my dog.
