You need to talk with your doctor to see if you can be taken off that stuff. You've been taking it for 23 years and never wondered if it was necessary? That's only masking the symptoms; not curing the cause of the problem.
Anybody having seizures, or prescribed medication to prevent these, is not likely to be hired. Attending schooling or company sponsored training to get a CDL is the easy part. Not being hired afterwards due to a debilitating medical condition is a major concern.
A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:
A Company-Sponsored Training Program is a school that is owned and operated by a trucking company.
The schooling often requires little or no money up front. Instead of paying up-front tuition you will sign an agreement to work for the company for a specified amount of time after graduation, usually around a year, at a slightly lower rate of pay in order to pay for the training.
If you choose to quit working for the company before your year is up, they will normally require you to pay back a prorated amount of money for the schooling. The amount you pay back will be comparable to what you would have paid if you went to an independently owned school.
Company-sponsored training can be an excellent way to get your career underway if you can't afford the tuition up front for private schooling.
I’ve had a CDL. I drove for a summer back in college. Would like to have another go at it. I’m now 57. I’ve been taking Depakote since 1998 for 3 seizures I had while a senior at Ball State. I’ve never had another seizure but I still take the medicine. Can I get a CDL? I would like to be an owner operator if possible. Thanks. Any help is appreciated. JP
My husband was on Depakote after his 2 traumatic brain injuries. He was on it from 1996 until he died in September 2014. Depakote is used for seizures, certain psychiatric conditions and anger management...which he definitely struggled with. His regular driver's license was removed due to the Depakote and another one of his meds. It is a medicine that requires a person to be tapered off of it.
I would suggest talking with your doctor to really see if you need to be on it and then take the appropriate steps.
