I have been reading every word on this site for months in order to make the right decisions for my future. Thanks to all of you who have unknowingly helped me. After thinking I was finally ready to take the cdl test I made an appt. to get my DOT physical. After waiting over a week, today was the day. Easily passed all phases except for bp. I have never had a problem before in my 53 years. The nice doctor told me to relax, I was getting passed and it was just a matter of for how long. I sat in the exam room and when the Tech came back and retook my bp her only comment was..."I don't know what you did, but congrats". I walked out with a 2 year cert. Then on to my local DMV to test there. My DMV closes at 5pm and when I checked in at 3:15 and told the clerk what test I wanted to take she gave me a funny look. At 4pm I found out why when I was called up to the counter to go over paperwork and have my picture taken (which I thought was a bit premature). I was taking general knowledge, combination, air brakes, tanker, and doubles/triples. This woman consulted with her boss and agreed I would have until 6pm to finish. Now I was really worried if I had underestimated these tests and now the pressure was on.After sitting down at the computer station, I took a deep breath and jumped in. Silly me, at 4:35 I was done and had passed all sections. I can do this...so far. I will begin training at the Swift Training Academy location here in Richmond on the 24th of this month if nothing changes.

Again, thanks for all of the encouraging posts and helpful information. If only I could get through the Hours Of Service(HOS) section in the High Road Training Program on this site. But, ignorance is bliss and I will keep plugging along. Brett, please reset my score on that section so I at least feel smarter. lol.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

DOT:

Department Of Transportation

A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.

State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.

Doubles:

Refers to pulling two trailers at the same time, otherwise known as "pups" or "pup trailers" because they're only about 28 feet long. However there are some states that allow doubles that are each 48 feet in length.

Dm:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

DMV:

Department of Motor Vehicles, Bureau of Motor Vehicles

The state agency that handles everything related to your driver's licences, including testing, issuance, transfers, and revocation.

HOS:

Hours Of Service

HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.

OWI:

Operating While Intoxicated

Steve, we're happy you finally came out and revealed yourself! I/we are thrilled to hear that we are helping people with their transition into the industry. It makes all the effort worth it. Good luck at Swift! You're in good hands.

Also, that Logbook section is pretty confusing. But just keep doing it, it'll eventually click. You're doing yourself a good thing by studying early. Lastly, you can reset your scores on the main page of the program. Go to the page where it shows all of your sections. Now look on the right side of the page and you'll see a link called 'Reset My Score'. Click and it'll reset.

And by the way, nice thread title. When I read that I instantly thought Old School made the thread. I don't know why, but the thing that came to my mind first when I read your title was Old School. Funny how that happened..

Logbook:

A written or electronic record of a driver's duty status which must be maintained at all times. The driver records the amount of time spent driving, on-duty not driving, in the sleeper berth, or off duty. The enforcement of the Hours Of Service Rules (HOS) are based upon the entries put in a driver's logbook.

Congrats on all that Steve. If you got any questions about Swift lemme know. I drive for Swift. Been with them since October and solo since a little before thanksgiving.

Thanks. I think it was from Old School that I got the idea when he called us out about a month ago for hiding.

I too took my physical yesterday, passed with flying colors! I start my driver training on April 7th here at a local training center.
