I believe the band Tool wrote a song that mentioned the modern catastrophe of Cali by a massive earthquake. Their advice? Learn to swim.
....and buy some property in Arizona. Gonna have a beautiful view of the ocean from there someday. I think a piece of property about 150 feet above sea level up the ridge on either side of Death Valley is going to be a dream also when it fills up.
It's funny because there's an old, closed down rock quarry not far from me. After they closed it the hole filled with water and they built a bunch of high dollar homes on the edge with boat docks and a beautiful view of the crystal clear lake.
Hopefully they stocked it w/ brownies and rainbow trout! Great "lake" fishing here in PA w/ closed off quarries! Pine Grove Furnace is awesome!
Being a California boy, I'll take earthquakes over just about any of the destructive weather out there - tornados, hurricanes, etc. When the earthquake strikes, it is pretty instantaneous and you're either at ground "zero" or you're not. I've been around almost all of the really devastating modern shakers here in California and for the most part, you escape any real consequences . . . lots of busted stuff afterwards but given how many people COULD have been killed, hurt, etc. it is pretty surprising how few are directly affected . . .

Now when the BIG ONE hits (and it will) there is no good place to be . . .

When the big one hits they will remake "30000 Leagues Under the Sea....California Edition" Thinking about buying a bunch of desert land on the cali boarder since that will be ocean front property when it happens.
Actually, the "Big One" as predicted/expected will actually be a "strike/slip" type where the land on both sides of a fault slip along the fault in opposite directions. The San Andreas fault comes ashore north of San Francisco (about Pt. Reyes) continues down the backbone of the coastal range, moves over to the high desert and then goes east along the backside of the mountains just north of the greater L.A. basin around Palmdale/Lancaster. This fault has moved over thirty feet relative to each side in the past as evidenced by creek beds and roads that don't line up any more. However, north of L.A. it is "caught" and has been unable to move and relieve the tension that has built up. It is predicted that when it does "slip" it will generate a 9.0 or higher magnitude earthquake through out the SoCal region. The land won't fall into the ocean, it will simply move a short distance north & south depending on which side of the fault you are looking at. However, the amount of energy released will be unimaginable. The last 9.0 or greater was in Alaska (9.2 in 1964) and another "big" one before that was in New Madrid, MO which reversed the course of the Mississippi river and knocked down houses in South Carolina with an estimated magnitude of 7.0 to 7.5. So, don't look for any real estate bargains in Arizona. Hell, the real estate in L.A. will probably be worthless. It is also estimated that the level of destruction will be so big it will bankrupt the whole economy of the United States. Bummer.
