Congrats on the new career! I submitted my letter of resignation this week and am counting down to my last day of December 17th and will begin school in January with Millis. It was a tough choice for me between Millis and Wilson, they both seem to be great places to not only get started, but also places to stick around for a long time!

Reading your posts and the responses of others has been a tremendous help...I'm excited to be joining such a wonderful community and profession with you!

Thanks, TXCoach, and likewise! This is a great community, and I'm glad you've joined. Congrats on your plans too! I've heard some good things about Millis, and what I've learned is that the important thing is to get started and stick around for a least a year with a company to get a solid work history going. You've got a great mentality in that regard.

What career are you transitioning out of?

Haya Matt;

It's in his bio/profile and also his 1st post in the diaries section, in case he doesn't see you tagged/quoted him. :)

Still looking forward to YOUR journey, good sir!

BMI:

Body mass index (BMI)

BMI is a formula that uses weight and height to estimate body fat. For most people, BMI provides a reasonable estimate of body fat. The BMI's biggest weakness is that it doesn't consider individual factors such as bone or muscle mass. BMI may:

  • Underestimate body fat for older adults or other people with low muscle mass
  • Overestimate body fat for people who are very muscular and physically fit

It's quite common, especially for men, to fall into the "overweight" category if you happen to be stronger than average. If you're pretty strong but in good shape then pay no attention.

Thanks, Anne! I was being a lazy librarian and hadn't looked in those places. I've seen his training diary entry now and replied on that thread. I need to remember to look at people's profiles too, in case they've filled them out.

And thanks! Things are progressing along for me. I've been winding things down at my current job, getting my apartment packed up, and just generally preparing for the "leap" in the next couple of weeks!

HOS:

Hours Of Service

HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.

Well, I'm now officially a South Dakota resident and have passed my CLP exam! The last few weeks were a whirlwind of wrapping up the job I've had for the last 16 years, getting moved out of my apartment, not to mention the transmission dying in my car when I went back to Michigan for Thanksgiving!

As my recruiter thought (though I thought the rules read differently), I was able to transfer my class-B CDL to SD and just had to take the combination test (I also took the tanker test, just to get that endorsement).

Now Wilson is doing the final processing on my app. It's possible I'll start next week, but he said more likely it'll be Dec 20, as they try to limit the class sizes, and next week is pretty full.

Onward and upward!

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

CLP:

Commercial Learner's Permit

Before getting their CDL, commercial drivers will receive their commercial learner's permit (CLP) upon passing the written portion of the CDL exam. They will not have to retake the written exam to get their CDL.

That's great Matt! I've been out a couple weeks and loving it. Still got a lot to learn, but soaking it up like a sponge!!

Glad to hear you're enjoying it, Mark!

And thanks, Anne! I've been thinking about that diary. Even my road to this point has been "involved" in terms of life changes.
