I was told today that my local tech college is booked solid for spring with regards to enrollment in a trucking program. I was wondering if there was anyway I could get a private company to train me. I'm talking about paid training and then I drive for them. That kind of deal. If anyone knows anything in the central Georgia area it'd be helpful.

My best driving buddy is from Savanna. He signed on with Schneider 4 years ago on a dedicated Georgia Pacific account. Home every weekend and has done very, very well. He had to come to Green Bay for training, but Schneider covered his expenses.

I don't see why you'd have any issue based on your location. Use this link to Apply For Paid CDL Training. Fill out one application and it'll be sent to several companies. Swift, C.R. England, Knight, Schneider and CFI aren't included but worth looking in to as well. Most members report that they're receiving phone calls within a couple hours from recruiters. As long as your background and driving record is relatively clean you could be in school within a week or so.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Schneider also has a training center in Charlotte, NC. If you want to be closer to home. Paid training, pay you while your at training, and guaranteed minimum pay for you fist 3 months solo so you can focus on getting used to driving and not worrying about your miles.

Millis has a Georgia training center. I believe its right outside Atlanta. Good company and good training program.

I believe Roehl also opened a full school in Atlanta area at their expanded facility. Well guess I’m dsting myself they expaned about 5 yrs ago. Time flies. Georgia has very good possibilities for drivers.

CFI will train you for free. We have a terminal in Atlanta. They do require you to get your permit and DOT physical before they will take you. Get receipts for these and they will reimburse you after you're hired.

Hope that helps.

Terminal:

A facility where trucking companies operate out of, or their "home base" if you will. A lot of major companies have multiple terminals around the country which usually consist of the main office building, a drop lot for trailers, and sometimes a repair shop and wash facilities.

DOT:

Department Of Transportation

A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.

State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.

That's where I did my orientation when I tried to drive for them. It's in Conley, southeast of Atlanta. CR England, ABF, Old Dominion & FedEx are all next to one another there. Also, Knight has their terminal in the other side of Atlanta, off of I-20.
