Bumper can’t go past back of box. However, you will have at least one Get Out And Look so you can personally verify that you are in the box before you sound your horn to signify you are done.
Which state? it maybe different I tested it IL if anything left the box it was a automatic failure. Same if your tires are on the line
It's been a while, but if I remember correctly they only care about the bumper, but I don't think you can fit your tires in there without the bumper passing the line. When I took my road test, I didn't even look at the box. I used a GOAL to scan the asphalt for a distinctive marker for the tires. I noticed a crack, stopped when my tires hit the crack and I was dead center in the box.
Switched jobs due to covid. Only driving part-time as motor coach travel has been slow to rebound. So now I'm working for PennDOT as a CDL examiner. During the alley dock, the rear-most portion of your vehicle must end up within the boundaries of the 3-foot box at the rear of the "alley". Does not matter where your tires are as long as they are within the side boundaries. You have 2 free pull-ups before accumulating points, as well as 2 free "looks". More than 2 looks is an auto-fail. BTW, I do stress that the 2 look limit is for testing purposes on the test pad only, and if you need to GOAL 20 times on the job after the test, by all means do so.

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:
- Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
- Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
- Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
- Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.
DOT:
Department Of Transportation
A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.
State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.

I’m in California . So that’s a good question. I’m going to do it so my tires don’t hit the line just to make sure but i just want to know for sure what the rule was.

Good point. My experience is based on Wisconsin. Could very well be different elsewhere.

When you do your alley dock and need to get your trailer bumper into the 3 foot box, is it ok if your tires cross the front line of that box or is it a fail? I’ve asked my instructors and got two diff answers. One said it’s a fail, one said it’s ok as long as my trailer bumper doesn’t go over the back line of the box. Please clarify. Thanks.
