I wanted to go through either Millis, Roehl or Prime for Company-Sponsored Training but got a Thanks but No Thanks because we aren't accepting applications from your area right now but If I go Charlotte Truck Driver Training School or Trans Tech then they will be more than happy to Accept me as a Recent Grad...! I'm still waiting to hear something from Prime before I decide a 100% but Today I went to look at the CTDTS Campus and talked to them, got a price, looked at the equipment, not impressed by the looks of the Tractors but their only used for training right...:) I can get started Monday 3-24 but in the long run what's going to open more doors for Me as a New Driver...?

I'll have to pay for the training upfront but Roehl said they will pay me back up to 4K but what is the best option for me...Go ahead and get my Class A and then find a Company to work for my 1st year or keep looking for Company-Sponsored Training

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Company-sponsored Training:

A Company-Sponsored Training Program is a school that is owned and operated by a trucking company.

The schooling often requires little or no money up front. Instead of paying up-front tuition you will sign an agreement to work for the company for a specified amount of time after graduation, usually around a year, at a slightly lower rate of pay in order to pay for the training.

If you choose to quit working for the company before your year is up, they will normally require you to pay back a prorated amount of money for the schooling. The amount you pay back will be comparable to what you would have paid if you went to an independently owned school.

Company-sponsored training can be an excellent way to get your career underway if you can't afford the tuition up front for private schooling.

I'm a fan of a company sponsored school. Ideally, you want to drive for that first company for a year anyways. So ignore that 1 year contract that you'll have to sign.

So now the question becomes; do you want to spend 5k to get a CDL? Or do you want to spend almost nothing and get a CDL and a guaranteed job after you complete training. If the company isn't hiring from your area then they're not hiring from your area. Getting a CDL through a private school will not help you at all because you're still in an area that they're not hiring out of.

So honestly, just apply to other companies and keep bugging Prime.

I hear what your saying and I agree with you 100% I would feel safer and better about attending a Company-Sponsored Training program. I'll give prime a call tomorrow and hope they'll say come on down or over or wherever they are..Thanks Daniel

Wow, they're not hiring from NC right now? Geez. That seems quite unusual. I don't think that will last. They'll be hiring again from there anytime I'm sure. They must have gotten a freakish amount of applicants all at one time from down there or something.

Keep buggin em until they decide:

A) We're ready to take more drivers from that area

or...

B) It makes more sense to hire one more driver that really wants to work here than it is to keep saying no and lose him to someone else. You might try playing this card:

"I got the o.k. from CR England and Swift but I really want to work for you guys. But I have to move quickly because I'm running out of funds fast so give me the o.k. already! You won't regret it!" That's what I would do. With the mountains of money these companies spend desperately trying to recruit people all year round they would be insane to lose someone they know really wants to work there. Because in the end they're going to spend a ton of money trying to draw you over from another company down the line anyhow.

Thanks Brett....I kind of thought it was a line of BS about them not taking people from my Area right now because we have a couple of Guys from this excellent website with Roehl. One thing I think which draws me to Company-Sponsored Training over the private school is Quality of equipment...The School I went to yesterday had some Cabovers which flashed me back to the 80's but we'll see.

I'm going to give Prime a Call now and see what they say..if I get a no thanks then I know it's me doing something
