Hello everyone, first time poster to this site. Little bit about myself: I am 53, need a career in which I hold the key to my success. I am a bit of a workaholic, 70-80 hour weeks are routine. I am looking to get into a career in which my hard word, determination, and dedication pay off. I am looking into getting my CDL license but need some help in choosing a school in Central Florida.

I know that I will be paying for school up-front, and I know I want a school which offers lots of "Real Driving Time". I am also looking for a school where the student to instructor ratio is 4 to 1. As well as the school as a strong employment placement record.

Any help in this are would be greatly appreciated.

Doug

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

OOS:

When a violation by either a driver or company is confirmed, an out-of-service order removes either the driver or the vehicle from the roadway until the violation is corrected.

Hey Doug. Welcome aboard!

Unfortunately we don't have the breakdown of statistics for each school on such a granular level but we do have a listing of truck driving schools in Florida and there's quite a few in Central Florida to choose from.

We also have a great series of articles on How To Choose A Truck Driving School which will help out quite a bit.

I can see you have a good idea of what you're looking for in a school and it sounds like your work ethic and attitude are very well-suited to trucking. You're ready to do your research and you're ready to put in a hard day's work so I think your approach will serve you well.

The two biggest things I always recommend to everyone when looking for CDL training are:

1) Get a list of major companies that hire from the school you're considering. Then call a few of them yourself from home to verify this. If major companies will hire from a school then you know they're at least a legitimate contender so far.

2) Go for a visit to the schools you're considering. While you're there, look at their equipment, their yard, their instructors, and all that. Get a feel for the atmosphere. But most importantly, take aside a few students privately - away from the instructors and staff - and ask their opinion on the school. When someone pays several thousand dollars to attend a school they're more than happy to share their opinion on it. If they're happy with it, they'd like to see others make a good choice for themselves. If their not happy with it they'll want to make sure others don't make the same mistake.

If major companies hire from a school, you like the atmosphere and facilities, and the students seem happy with the place then keep them on your list of schools for consideration. Once you've finished visiting the ones you're considering you should have no problem choosing the one you feel will suit you the best.

Hope this helps!
