Hello. Well I finally applied to Prime Inc, and I'm waiting to hear back from my recruiter. I was interested in learning if any drivers are up for taking me along with them on their routes. I have had a change in my plans and don't really have anywhere I have to be for any amount of time. I'm traveling light and I'm looking for some "real world" experience with the driving industry. I learn well just by being around and watching people do things. I know I can't help out with the technical side of stuff, but I can do laundry, cook moderately well, or fetch things at stops, and keep you company. I'm not looking for a date or anything like that. I'm just a newbie looking for someone to hang out with and show me the sides of the industry that textbooks, and online forums just don't cover. If anyone is interested they can contact me at adj79@live.com. I'm currently located in jackson TN if anyone is passing through. I'd be interested in leaving tomorrow if possible. Again, the destination or length of the route is really unimportant to me. I'm restless being here and thought it would be fun to start my journey asap. Thanks! Elizabeth

You certainly seem to have an adventurous spirit! I'd imagine you'd have to be pretty careful to jump into a truck w/ a stranger, especially expressing your interest on the world wide web - not trying to be sexist. I'm a father and I often think like one ;)

Man, Bill, first thing I wanted to do was say, "Hey! Little Lady, slow down a bit here!" I just didn't want to offend either but I am a father AND a grandpa and my little girlies popped right into my head. Elizabeth, I'm sure you have a good head on your shoulders and can probably take good care of yourself so I ain't preaching (I'll do that another time) but BE REAL CAREFUL! I would hope a real good lady trucker would want to take you up on your proposition. I've met a lot of young women hitch'n over the years and they stayed safe so I know it's possible. Just take care, maybe run any perspective rides by a couple of people at this website who have had dealings with the prospective truck-mate, you know? Just my 2cents (per mile) on the subject.

Hey guys, you may think Elizabeth is being a little foolish, but back in the day there were always people hanging out at truck stops looking for a ride somewhere. You will still see people hanging out at truck stops tying to get a ride somewhere. Just last week I was in Colorado and there was a man at the truck stop trying to get a ride to Las Cruces, NM. I get the feeling Elizabeth is a confident woman who know how to take care of herself.

Being able to ride with someone is really a great way to get a feel for what you might be getting into. Elizabeth I'm in Tennessee right now, but I'm heading home to Texas for a few days of rest. It's really kind of hard now days for people to take you with them. The company's rider policy dictates who you can take with you, and at most companies the driver has to pay a weekly insurance fee to be able to take riders with them. I always have kept a rider policy active, because I have three daughters who all want to ride with me at times. Elizabeth, you can read about my travels with my oldest daughter if you're interested. It's not the same as riding along, but it will give you a little bit of a sense of the adventure. My middle daughter is planning on riding along with me next month for her vacation time. I'm thinking I may document it as well since everyone seemed to enjoy it last time I did that. It's fun for me to do, and it gives the current crowd of newbies on the site a chance to see what really goes on out there on the road.

Oh, Elizabeth, I meant to tell you don't wait too long on that recruiter. I recommend that you call them every other day. Don't be concerned that you are bothering them, you will be keeping yourself at the top of their working list, and sometimes that is a long list with the people who never bother to call sitting at the bottom of the list. It also lets them know that you are eager and ready to get going. You've heard that old saying about "the squeaky wheel getting the grease", well it's definitely true in the world of trucking recruiters.

If I didn't have a trainee I would say ok. You really need to be careful who you ride with. Some folks intentions might not be sincere.

True, Old School mentioned that a lot of companies could have restrictions on sudden, last minute passengers. I'd repeat again, you have got to be careful. Try to ride with another woman, is my suggestion!

If you need further inspiration for caution, listen to Cat Steven's "Wild World," spoken like a true father, educator, mentor, and caring human being...
