Again, thanks for adding me to the site. Newby headed to Knight Flatbed, Gulf Port next month. I've trolled here since CDL school. Needless to say some of the post provided valuable insight. Look forward to continuing to learn here and hopefully, be able to add valuable content someday. My biggest concern is tarping at my age. Otherwise, I'm looking forward to the adventure.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

If Old School can accomplish this at his extremely advanced age, I'm sure you can, too.

Eye on the goal! Don't worry how you get there.

Incidentally, I'm retired military myself, so I'll be keeping a close eye on your progress.

Hello Glenbob!

You and I will definitely end up meeting each other. Have you spoken with Jason yet? He will be your driver manager , and he has probably been somewhat active in the recruiting process also. I honestly don't know how involved he is at the beginning, but you will get to know him very well as time goes by. I am also a flatbed driver from the Gulfport terminal. We seldom ever see that terminal since our Hydro plan is in Delhi, Louisiana. You will be in Delhi a lot.

Don't worry about tarping,. It is not that hard, and we don't do it that often. Most of the time you will be pulling a Conestoga trailer.

Terminal:

A facility where trucking companies operate out of, or their "home base" if you will. A lot of major companies have multiple terminals around the country which usually consist of the main office building, a drop lot for trailers, and sometimes a repair shop and wash facilities.

Driver Manager:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

This is a load I tarped last week. It was the only load I tarped all month. I think some of the tarp loads go to the new guys just to get them some experience with it. Many of our loads have multiple stops. That is why they are put on Conestogas.

I’ve spoken with Jason and visited the terminal yesterday. Pretty much said headed to a 90-10% ratio on Conestoga. In the end probably tarp a couple times a month. He mentioned that there were only two FB trainers. Basically, when trainer said I was ready he’d move me to solo. Excited and apprehensive at the same time.
