Yes, you need to be tested negative if you want to take a road test with the state. At least this is how it works in Mass.
Your school did not require you to take a drug test??
Not sure which school you went too, or is going too. But I was required to take a DOT physical and drug test in day one when I got my CDL back in 2018.
A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:
A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.
State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.
It says they do in the paper work but when I took my dot physical before starting school I did not get drug tested

Hopefully not a miscommunication, but it should be easy to spot. Did anyone get tested? We were tested in the first week while doing the classroom portion. I had gotten a drug test with my physical beforehand because I didn’t think to ask but I had to take one again.
It was a very big show with everyone going out in turn to be tested by the doctor. He also would charge for a physical if you needed but always be ahead of the game.

Hi there I finished my schooling 2 weeks ago for my cdl and have my road test Friday. Im not with any company I’m just obtaining my cdl so I can find a company I like after. I was told when I started school I would have to take a drug test but that was back in the end of November still have not got one. Am I not subjected to a drug test since I am not pre-employed?
