Been with Marten for a year doing intermodel out of KC. Love it. They are tough on safety but I believe they care about the drivers. Made me take a sleep apnea test...they pay for my CPAP , supplies and I have a sleep coach. Inclement pay, don't want us driving in snow storms. We had a slow Winter in KC last year and was paid 7 days to stay home. Some people complain about everything. I found a place to retire.

Sleep Apnea:

A physical disorder in which you have pauses in your breathing, or take shallow breaths, during sleep. These pauses can last anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes. Normal breathing will usually resume, sometimes with a loud choking sound or snort.

In obstructive sleep apnea, your airways become blocked or collapse during sleep, causing the pauses and shallow breathing.

It is a chronic condition that will require ongoing management. It affects about 18 million people in the U.S.

CPAP:

Constant Positive Airway Pressure

CPAP is a breathing assist device which is worn over the mouth or nose. It provides nighttime relief for individuals who suffer from Sleep Apnea.

It's really good to see you back around these parts, JYD!

What's the 'hometime' like with intermodal? Marten is really showing nicely, these days...in my opinion. Inclement pay is a plus; and a model many companies actually SHOULD follow; again just my opinion.

That year sure went QUICK, didn't it? They seem to DO that lately, haha!

Don't WAIT that long before stopping back next time, ok ?!?!?

Best to ya; stay safe!

Intermodal:

Transporting freight using two or more transportation modes. An example would be freight that is moved by truck from the shipper's dock to the rail yard, then placed on a train to the next rail yard, and finally returned to a truck for delivery to the receiving customer.

In trucking when you hear someone refer to an intermodal job they're normally talking about hauling shipping containers to and from the shipyards and railyards.

I'm glad you're happy with them. Read the fine print - in the event that you part ways with Marten in 5 years the cost of the sleep study, transportation to and from and lodging in Mondovi for your sleep study, and your CPAP machine are all immediately due and payable. It's about $10k and it's not pro-rated.

Was that your personal experience or something you heard from someone else?

I've had two sleep studies myself and charges were never anything outrageous like that so I contacted Marten today. I asked Marten and they said that your statement is incorrect. If a driver leaves within 6 months they must repay the travel and hotel arrangements and both the driver and recruiter initial the "integrity sheet" that discloses these requirements.

Of course, a driver should read whatever they sign or initial.

It's been a few years so they may have changed their policy. I went to their orientation for a dedicated, home daily, weekends off account with Marten. I had a med cert that was less than 30 days old and the recruiter I was working with agreed that I wouldn't need a new physical. Imagine my surprise when I got a text from a clinic telling me I had an appointment with them on the same morning I was supposed to be at Marten's orientation in a city 24 miles away from the orientation site! The next day I got a call from a different Marten employee (not my recruiter) asking me if I was still planning on going to orientation. I told him, "Sure, but what's this clinic appointment at the same time in a different city?". He told me it was probably a mistake and just to ignore it and go to orientation. My recruiter told me I would need to do a pre-hire drug screen. Didn't mention any other testing.

When I showed up at orientation the woman running the show took roll call then drove me and another driver to the clinic. It was basically a physical conditioning test with a catch. As I was walking out the door, the tech lassoed me with a measuring tape around my neck. I was literally in motion leaving the room when he did that. He didn't ask me to stop moving or make any effort to ensure an accurate measurement. I wear a 17 1/2" neck in a dress shirt. The tech wrote down 18 3/4" on his form. I went home an measured my neck with a tape and then had the gf measure it - 17 1/2". I didn't think it would be an issue. WRONG!

On the afternoon of the second day of orientation, while we were filling out forms and finishing the hazmat training, the woman running the show handed me two forms separate from the stack of forms I and all the other drivers had been given. One was a sleep apnea self-assessment questionnaire, the second was a release authorizing the Mondovi Sleep Center to have access to all of my medical records. That's weird. Why would a driver in Washington have to have a sleep study done in Mondovi, WI? Oh yeah, Marten's headquarters are in Mondovi.

Obviously, I had several questions. Unfortunately the Marten rep running orientation was hard of hearing and refused to wear her hearing aids until the last hour of her workday, preferring to lip read. Her answers were less than satisfactory. Was it the unnecessary sleep study? (Slept next to an RN for several years. She would have noticed sleep apnea.) Was it the week on a Greyhound (unpaid) to travel to and from Wisconsin for the unnecessary sleep study? Was it the FIVE YEAR interest-free, "loan" for the forced sleep study, the bus ride and lodging? Was it the sneaky, underhanded way they went about it? Some combination or all of the above? Couldn't tell you - I shook my head and walked out. Got a better job. Marten still emails me job postings.

HAZMAT:

Hazardous Materials

Explosive, flammable, poisonous or otherwise potentially dangerous cargo. Large amounts of especially hazardous cargo are required to be placarded under HAZMAT regulations

Pre-hire:

What Exactly Is A Pre-Hire Letter?

Pre-hire letters are acceptance letters from trucking companies to students, or even potential students, to verify placement. The trucking companies are saying in writing that the student, or potential student, appears to meet the company's minimum hiring requirements and is welcome to attend their orientation at the company’s expense once he or she graduates from truck driving school and has their CDL in hand.

We have an excellent article that will help you Understand The Pre-Hire Process.

A Pre-Hire Letter Is Not A Guarantee Of Employment

The people that receive a pre-hire letter are people who meet the company's minimum hiring requirements, but it is not an employment contract. It is an invitation to orientation, and the orientation itself is a prerequisite to employment.

During the orientation you will get a physical, drug screen, and background check done. These and other qualifications must be met before someone in orientation is officially hired.
