Alright so my situation kind of sucks. I've applied to about 7 different trucking companies throughout the past few months to join a CDL training program, received calls from most but I've been turned down by them too or have had no further replies. I'm starting to feel discouraged, but I really want to get into truck driving. My work history kind of sucks and I've been told that by two companies, and I had a speeding ticket for 22 over back in January, but I've already taken defensive driving and am waiting on my certificate. Two other companies told me my ticket would make me ineligible, one said to call back once I'd taken care of it and we'll see from there but the other said I'd have to wait 3 years.... I've also attempted going through trucking school to try and give myself a better chance, but to get funding I'd need to basically have a written statement promising me a job once I've finished, but I've already put the dilemma I've had with that. Now I'm really at a loss of what to do now. I'm waiting for my defensive driving certificate to be mailed so I can submit it to court, but even then do I have a chance after???

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

BMI:

Body mass index (BMI)

BMI is a formula that uses weight and height to estimate body fat. For most people, BMI provides a reasonable estimate of body fat. The BMI's biggest weakness is that it doesn't consider individual factors such as bone or muscle mass. BMI may:

  • Underestimate body fat for older adults or other people with low muscle mass
  • Overestimate body fat for people who are very muscular and physically fit

It's quite common, especially for men, to fall into the "overweight" category if you happen to be stronger than average. If you're pretty strong but in good shape then pay no attention.

Welcome to our forum Samuel.

You have got a couple of things going against you as you already know. That ticket is killing you right now. It isn't really going to matter to anyone that you took a defensive driving course. Any ticket of 15 or more over is a job killer in this industry. Remember this is a driving job. You don't have a resume to give these employers. You give them your driving record - 15 over is a major red flag to these employers. They consider it as reckless driving.

Here is my suggestion. Be patient and take the time to fix the things that are working against you. Take three years and establish a good solid work record. That means get a job and keep at it for a few years. That speaks volumes in your favor. Guess what else happens during that time? Your ticket will drop off of the radar also. Then you will have a clean driving record and a solid work history. Boom! You are good to go then.

I can almost anticipate your response to that advice. If you want this you will realize how solid it is. If you are just another flash in the pan you will continue to figure out how to get a truck driving job immediately. One path is for sure a great way to prepare for this career. The other will not work out too well for you. It is your choice. Choose wisely.

OOS:

When a violation by either a driver or company is confirmed, an out-of-service order removes either the driver or the vehicle from the roadway until the violation is corrected.
