Also, I need to get better coming to stops in the appropriate gear. They want to see us at a complete stop in the lower gears (5th at the very least). Before we reset to 2nd. That said, I wait too long before downshifting trying to rush down all my gears. I know that this takes time and finesse.

The above is unrealistic unless approaching a stop sign or intersection. I never, mean never downshift to a stop using anything lower than 6th. That gets you to about 15 mph with Jake on high. Unnecessary to downshift any lower. Now that you passed... you can begin developing your own approach and style.

Good luck in the next steps.

My trainers want us to get down to 5th as well if possible. That way if the light changes while your still rolling your in a good gear to continue. If you do have to stop, your t-bar is already down and you don’t have to worry about stalling if you forgot it and tried to start in 6th.

Then there are times when the light changes quickly and you no time to down shift, just hit the brakes and press the clutch. Flip t-bar bar down and start all over.

Fair enough... for now.

I’ll bet you a burger and a shake at Charlie’s that; come next April you’re not catching 5 coming to a full stop.

Deal?

Your definitely gonna win G!!! Getting down to 5th is a play it safe, demonstrate you can thing for testing only. Trainers already told me after I’m out city driving for a bit, I’ll figure out how to float the gears and only downshift when necessary.

I’ll still meet ya for a burger and a Shake at Charlies anyway. My treat!!!!

Float The Gears:

An expression used to describe someone who is shifting gears without using the clutch at all. Drivers are taught to "Double Clutch" or press and release the clutch twice for each gear shift. If you're floating gears it means you're simply shifting without using the clutch at all.

All in fun. I look forward to that!

Keep up the great work. I think you’ve found your Mojo.

D'Dave; I / we had this typed up when you replied, so .. idk how to add your latest post. Here's this:

"We're in, G'Town!"

Tom & I will bet you, also. He's home 'early' and annoying me; but I've pulled THIS up, once more.

On Tom's behalf; when we pulled tanks for Saunders, LLC (The Shelley Co.) in Toledo... Rule of thumb was....4th down, and 4th up (LOADED) from Newark .. to Thornville, Ohio. It was 204, (not 224.. that's our Willard lane. My oops, not his. The #''s....)

US 13 to 204, on that 'little' exit, was DOWN, fully loaded and placarded with 6122 I believe.... Definitely 4th. YES, we stopped. Scarily, and then DRAGGED (in 4th) up hill. Look up that exit one day, omg.. i have photos and I even get scared, looking.

G'Town, I know you know more.... you learn, retain, and train. Tom assumes. Perhaps lower than 4th WOULD'VE been optimal for the daycab Pete & tank.. but it's what we just 'did.' Me, once. Him always.

All we've got, and Tom's betting with G' on this one.

My input? I tried it .. and did it, once. The struggle was so real, that the F'bomb was my middle name that day. I pulled into the 'concert venue' where Aaron Lewis had a show setting up, and switched with the 'real driver.' That was 4th. Dave, I'm always rooting (was gonna say pulling, haha!) for you.. we both are..I wouldn't post this without the approval of the Tom'stapo.. but with a loaded tank, sure could be different. I was 'fine' to stop/start in 4th, as he trained me, in the Pete. ON FLAT GROUND! That situation was way out of my wheelhouse; so I .. didn't anymore.

I learned a LOT, however.. in those few years, with my permit. Maybe doubles are different; but the 'manipulation' in 4th was in and of itself. A fine line, I wasn't ready to take on, but had to be. I couldn't imagine a higher gear.

Let us know, would ya?? Tom STILL swears by 4th.. even now, hauling cardboard....! If it's lower, he missed the memo. Same Mack as G'town, tho!

Best always, man!!!

~ Anne & Tom! ~

ps: If you ever want a 'roadie' .... I WAS this bird, that day, hehe! Road pals .. get yourself a PEBBLE! (ps: WATCH/LISTEN at own risk!)

Doubles:

Refers to pulling two trailers at the same time, otherwise known as "pups" or "pup trailers" because they're only about 28 feet long. However there are some states that allow doubles that are each 48 feet in length.

HOS:

Hours Of Service

HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.
