Just got off the phone with PTL. The recruiter says everything looks good and she will send the pre-hire letter to whichever school I end up attending. Things are starting to move quickly. Schneider National called and left a message, so I'm calling them next. I'm thinking that six companies on the short list would be good. Does that sound reasonable? These are the companies I'd like to see on that list:

Con-Way
PTL
Schneider
US Xpress
Maverick
TMC

Ok, now Maverick Transport has refrigerated and flatbed fleets I believe, TMC Transportation is flatbed, and the rest are dry van. The different types of freight will entail completely different job duties and to some degree lifestyles. Any of them can be a fine way to get your trucking career underway, but I want to make sure you know there's quite a bit of difference and you may prefer some over others. Make sure the type of freight you want to haul, if you have a preference, is one of the key factors in choosing the right truck driving job (follow that link and you'll find some great articles on the subject).

But that's a great list of companies to choose from. Speak with all of them and apply to all of them, assuming you don't change your mind after considering the type of freight you'd like to haul. Dig in and figure out which one you feel might work best for you.

Dry Van:

A trailer or truck that that requires no special attention, such as refrigeration, that hauls regular palletted, boxed, or floor-loaded freight. The most common type of trailer in trucking.

Pre-hire:

What Exactly Is A Pre-Hire Letter?

Pre-hire letters are acceptance letters from trucking companies to students, or even potential students, to verify placement. The trucking companies are saying in writing that the student, or potential student, appears to meet the company's minimum hiring requirements and is welcome to attend their orientation at the company’s expense once he or she graduates from truck driving school and has their CDL in hand.

We have an excellent article that will help you Understand The Pre-Hire Process.

A Pre-Hire Letter Is Not A Guarantee Of Employment

The people that receive a pre-hire letter are people who meet the company's minimum hiring requirements, but it is not an employment contract. It is an invitation to orientation, and the orientation itself is a prerequisite to employment.

During the orientation you will get a physical, drug screen, and background check done. These and other qualifications must be met before someone in orientation is officially hired.

OOS:

When a violation by either a driver or company is confirmed, an out-of-service order removes either the driver or the vehicle from the roadway until the violation is corrected.

Alrighty. I just got approval for pre-hire status with Schneider National. That makes three on my list. The recruiter from US Xpress and I have been playing phone tag, so nothing definite from them yet. Things are moving right along.

Have you thought about Nussbaum Trucking.? I'm not in their hiring area but they have some good benefits and pay, plus nice equipment and say they try to get you home every weekend if that matters to you...hometime isn't something high on my list since I'm separated but comfort, work and money are...:)

I've never heard of them, but thanks for the tip. I will look them up. :)

Yes,Firstly I called them for information and if i was satisfied then i was told to fill out the application first. if they does not give out much information until they have your application in hand. They want the main application filled out first and more. I guess maybe this saves them some time as well.
