Doug Andrus out of Idaho Falls, ID.

Had six weeks of solid training (240 hours behind the wheel) all done on a 13 speed.

Highly recommend them as a company if you are looking to break into the industry. They have been very good to me.

Big M Transportation out of Blue Mountain, MS trains new drivers, they even have a small school to get your CDL if needed.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.

LTL’s with training programs I know of off top of head. ABF, YRC/Yellow, Pitt-Ohio, Estes, FedEx, A. Duie Pyle

LTL:

Less Than Truckload

Refers to carriers that make a lot of smaller pickups and deliveries for multiple customers as opposed to hauling one big load of freight for one customer. This type of hauling is normally done by companies with terminals scattered throughout the country where freight is sorted before being moved on to its destination.

LTL carriers include:

  • FedEx Freight
  • Con-way
  • YRC Freight
  • UPS
  • Old Dominion
  • Estes
  • Yellow-Roadway
  • ABF Freight
  • R+L Carrier

We are now owned by Heartland Express, they own us, Millis and Smith. One family with 3 training options. While I love CFI, I know these others are treated well. CFI for OTR , Millis is mostly regional and Heartland seems to have a mix.

Figure out what are your top 3 most important wants. Then try to find a company that satisfies at least two of your most important needs.

Regional:

Regional Route

Usually refers to a driver hauling freight within one particular region of the country. You might be in the "Southeast Regional Division" or "Midwest Regional". Regional route drivers often get home on the weekends which is one of the main appeals for this type of route.

OTR:

Over The Road

OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.

What do you like most about CFI? Do they hire out of Louisiana?

Yes they do. We are treated like family. They get me home when I need and for however long I need. Equipment is kept well maintained. Getting things fixed is never a problem. We have company paid satellite radio in our trucks. And so much more.

Hey Big Scott: Is CFI the old Consolidated Freight? When I was a kid, my mother worked at Consolidated Freight in Madison, Wi. She was a secretary there.

Consolidated Freightways went bankrupt 20 years ago. No relation to CFI. CFI is an abbreviation for Contract Freighters Inc.
