Can someone provide up to date info as of 2022 If you fail The test, is it reported to DOT? Are they DOT required? Can your license be taken away?

DOT:

Department Of Transportation

A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.

State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.

Hi! I'm a DOT Certified Drug Screening Technician and Instructor.

Currently, the DOT does not recognize hair follicle testing for their tests. At this time, there is no such thing as a DOT hair follicle test.

A failed or refused hair follicle test will not be sent to the FMCSA clearinghouse, only DOT Urine and Breath Alcohol will go to the clearinghouse. As such, I do not think it could affect your license.

CSA:

Compliance, Safety, Accountability (CSA)

The CSA is a Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) initiative to improve large truck and bus safety and ultimately reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities that are related to commercial motor vehicle

FMCSA:

Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration

The FMCSA was established within the Department of Transportation on January 1, 2000. Their primary mission is to prevent commercial motor vehicle-related fatalities and injuries.

What Does The FMCSA Do?

  • Commercial Drivers' Licenses
  • Data and Analysis
  • Regulatory Compliance and Enforcement
  • Research and Technology
  • Safety Assistance
  • Support and Information Sharing

Fm:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

As Pelican stated, it can't be reported to the clearinghouse. However, it can be shown on your DAC report, if the company uses that system. Your career can be derailed before it starts, if you have a failed hair follicle test on your DAC.

DAC:

Drive-A-Check Report

A truck drivers DAC report will contain detailed information about their job history of the last 10 years as a CDL driver (as required by the DOT).

It may also contain your criminal history, drug test results, DOT infractions and accident history. The program is strictly voluntary from a company standpoint, but most of the medium-to-large carriers will participate.

Most trucking companies use DAC reports as part of their hiring and background check process. It is extremely important that drivers verify that the information contained in it is correct, and have it fixed if it's not.

Then why would a company, even ask? If it’s not DOT required?

Because the DOT requirement is a federal minimum.

Any company can require greater breadth/depth of testing without reporting to DOT. There is nothing discriminatory when any applicant is subject to the exact same battery of tests and qualifying requirements.

The trucking business is about risk mitigation and hiring candidates that have the best chance of success.

Most likely for insurance reasons, I'd bet.

A trucker crashes a truck that's one thing, insurance wise.

A trucker crashes a truck and it turns out they were using drugs totally changes the outcome.

Correct on both levels.

For the O/P,

My guy has been driving 19 years, and G'Town isn't far behind.....some companies are currently asking MY GUY for hair samples, as an experienced driver, in companies that only HIRE experienced dfrivers!!

It's a roll of the dice, guys & gals. Personally, I wouldn't chance it. Everything is recorded somewhere. He has NO problems passing, nor would I .. I'm just stating this, for 'case in point' purposes.

If I kept a chart of the 'do's and don'ts' ... it'd probably change more than once a week.

Just saying;
