"Run it legal, Log it Legal" -Stevens Transport
I can’t stress the importance of running logs legal. As far as DOT looks at it, if its not on the log then it didn’t happen. I have had them look at a fuel receipt and checked it against the time on my log.
Another big area is shipping numbers. Since ELD’s have come into existance citations have gone up, mostly for form and manner.
I highly recommend keeping things high and tight. If an officer finds several log issues it’s not going to get better from there.
A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.
State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.

Does logging these inspections fall outside of FMCSA rules and are left to each company to establish their own requirements? And if a LEO inspects a driver’s logs, what is he looking for in regards to pre/post trip?
The CSA is a Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) initiative to improve large truck and bus safety and ultimately reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities that are related to commercial motor vehicle

I strongly recommend studying the High Road on line course section on “Log Book (Job Duties)” pages 92 to 108. It covers this topic in detail. Includes quizzes.

Nor will you find any time periods listed for fueling, paperwork, securement checks, loading/unloading, or any other job related duty. The variables for each will prevent the setting of any specific time. You simply Log what you do.
Some days it'll take x amount of time. Other days it'll take y.
