Hi,

I recently applied through my local employment office for the WIOA grant. Waited a couple weeks, got a call back and the first thing they asked me was if I had any truck driving experience. I was honest and said no, that's why I want to go to school. They then said I did not qualify and would require some type of experience driving either a box truck, or Uhaul truck for example. This is discouraging since I did all the research I could and no where did I hear that determined eligibility. In fact many people I've heard got the grant had never driven anything other than a car before. I even reached out to people online and asked about it, they were shocked also. Should I have known this? Do I have any other options? I know I qualify financially. Thanks in advance

WIOA:

WIOA - Workforce Innovation & Opportunity Act (aka WIA)

Formerly known as the Workforce Investment Act (WIA), the WIOA was established in 1998 to prepare youth, adults and dislocated workers for entry and reentry into the workforce. WIOA training funds are designed to serve laid-off individuals, older youth and adults who are in need of training to enter or reenter the labor market. A lot of truck drivers get funding for their CDL training through WIOA.

Did you read the links we sent on a post you created 5 weeks ago?

Looked like this:

We recommend Paid CDL Training Programs. Based on what happened, my suggestion is to refocus your efforts on this type of schooling/training.

Good luck.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

It's not a requirement. This is one option that I explored for my CDL. I could have went that route and chose not to. The people at the offices where applications for WIOA are processed have great latitude in choosing to move forward with a person's application or not. This sounds like they used personal bias to eliminate your application, with the assumption that you are otherwise qualified.

You could go to another employment office in your area. Don't tell them that you were determined to be ineligible at another office. Start the process fresh at the new office and see where it goes.

Albeit years ago I went thru school w the WOIA grant, there were no requirements like that. I was unemployed and received the grant. Seems a bit fishy!

James, I agree with G-Town. Why waste your time begging the government to pay for your schooling when you can get paid to go to school through Paid CDL Training Programs?

Paid CDL training will be better quality training. You'll get paid during the training process, and the company training you is the one that's hiring you, so the training will be custom-tailored to the company you're working for.
