Hi all,

Do you guys knows if Companies are hiring students? I haven’t driven in awhile (already have my CDL). I’ve been getting anwsering machines from companies.

I know Prime and Schneider trains from the ground up. I’m mainly interested in Prime, any info is awesome thank you.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

I am a CDL Instructor at Prime and just received new students. I have more coming in a couple weeks. So yes, they are hiring, however, they have slowed down the hiring numbers. Getting in may be harder than before

2 months ago you posted that you have a CDL with no experience.

Have you worked somewhere driving this year? Have you driven anywhere since you attained your CDL?

Freight is slow. This hiring dynamic is not unique to Prime right now. It could improve in a few months, or it could get worse. It's a "wait and see" matter right now. Other members here will likely offer other opinions.

Companies are always hiring students, but they have scaled back a bit right now, as Kearsey stated.

Freight is extremely slow and slowing further for the holiday season. That has everyone rattled a little bit. Diesel prices remain high, and supply is tight, which also concerns companies. The economic outlook for next year is pretty dismal, as well. That's a third problem they face right now.

People often wonder, "Is now a good time to get started in trucking?"

It's always a good time to get started in trucking. There are no bad times to become a truck driver. There will always be a demand for drivers, even when the economy is doing poorly. Companies may shift their focus based on projections for the coming months, but they're always hiring students and experienced drivers alike.

Truck availability is getting harder, too. Post covid trucks often have serious mechanical issues due to rushed assembly. Older trucks are out of warranty or approaching it. So carriers don't want to rely on it
