I was listening to RoadDog Trucking on SiriusXM a couple weeks ago. The lady that heads up the FMCSA now was being interviewed.
She was asked about the truck parking shortage. She said that the “Bi-Partisan Infrastructure Bill” (remember that $1.5 Trillion?) includes funding to help alleviate the shortage. She didn’t provide any specifics.
Trump’s regulation reductions have probably been reversed by now, so it likely takes 10 years to get permits to construct anything. Trump claimed to have reduced it to 18 months.
Regarding drivers losing parking privileges, they blew it at Harlow’s Casino near Greenville, MS. Drivers used to have a parking lot there. It is now closed off and posted “Do Not Dump Trash in Lot”.
The CSA is a Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) initiative to improve large truck and bus safety and ultimately reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities that are related to commercial motor vehicle
The FMCSA was established within the Department of Transportation on January 1, 2000. Their primary mission is to prevent commercial motor vehicle-related fatalities and injuries.
What Does The FMCSA Do?
I copied this out of the “Bi-Partsan Infrastructure Bill” fact sheet at white house.gov.
Safety
America has one of the highest road fatality rates in the industrialized world. The legislation invests $11 billion in transportation safety programs, including a new, $5 billion Safe Streets for All program to help states and localities reduce crashes and fatalities in their communities, especially for cyclists and pedestrians. It includes a new program to provide grants to community owned utilities to replace leaky and obsolete cast iron and bare steel natural gas pipelines, some of which are over 100 years old. It will more than double funding directed to programs that improve the safety of people and vehicles in our transportation system, including highway safety, truck safety, and pipeline and hazardous materials safety.
I am always aware of where my parking options are. Like others, I try for Mom and pop locations, but some of those are pretty sketchy.
My trip planning process usually has three parking options.
The first is: Oh snap, everything went sideways, and I only drove a couple hours.
The Second: This is where I reasonably planned to be at the end of my day. Some slowdown, but that was already built into my plan.
The Third is a "Hail Mary" parking option: "sliding in with my hind end on fire, nothing went wrong, I hit all green lights, didn't miss a turn, hallelujah everything was perfect and I have five mins left on my drive clock" kinda parking solution.
You can bet I'm using the second option the most! 🤣
I have gone option 3 twice. That's almost more stressful than creeping along in traffic. Option 1 has me feeling like, "Why did I accept this load?"
Truck drivers who regularly pick up from or deliver to the shipping ports will often be required to carry a TWIC card.
Your TWIC is a tamper-resistant biometric card which acts as both your identification in secure areas, as well as an indicator of you having passed the necessary security clearance. TWIC cards are valid for five years. The issuance of TWIC cards is overseen by the Transportation Security Administration and the Department of Homeland Security.
I have used option three about 8-9 times, but everything has to have been perfect up to the second option stop. If it hasn't, I don't risk it. It's super super stressful!

The solution is easy, build more parking. The problem is nobody wants to pay for it, each state, city, county and township should get together and build truck parking lots. Like Packrat said everyone wants what a trucks brings bit then doesn't want to see them anymore.
Truck drivers are their own worst enemies too, they litter and trash places to the point they get kicked out.
