What happened to Melton?
Nothing shady. Common practice to pay a higher CPM for short hauls. Besides it’s entry level pay. Once you get beyond and absorb the learning curve, proving your worth as an experienced driver, pay increases and the choicest runs will follow.
Drivers are often paid by the mile and it's given in cents per mile, or cpm.
As G-Town says, many companies use a sliding scale. Not shady at all.
My last company didn't pay more cpm but had a flat rate for under 300 miles which was actually more than the cpm by a bit over $50. My present company will say that they'll give $XX and it is always more than what I would make by the cpm.
As for Western Express paying less for the longer distances, ask the recruiter point blank to tell you.

A question for the company drivers at Western Express:
I spoke to a recruiter from Western Express but it seemed shady.
He says their pay increased to .42cpm but I heard they use a sliding scale. Meaning if the load is under 600 miles, it’s .42cpm but if it’s over 600 miles, the cpm decreases. Is this true? And if it is what does the cpm look like?
CPM:
