I’m actually getting ready to go to bed for few hours so i can knock out a few tanker loads before it supposed to get here. Which they are forecasting later in the afternoon. I’m curious though why are they pulling the plows?

I live about 45 minutes north of des moines in a pretty rural area. No obstructions to stop the wind, its just not safe for the plows on secondary roads. Iowa DOT frequently pulls theirs as well when it's unsafe as well but they're still out there right now. The winds supposed to kick up around 2am or so. Currently along I-35 visibility is about a quarter mile. Most of our drivers are still taking loads out but coming back empty which is beyond stupid in my opinion. I got called a "fair weather driver" by another driver for calling in. I don't care, I'll enjoy the heck of out my 4 day holiday weekend.
Earlier this year on new years day we didn't have nearly as much snow or wind and the snow drifts I plowed through on the state highway I take to get to I-35 in Ellsworth (exit 133) were higher than the hood on my minivan.
A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.
State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.
I just saw this from the National Weather Service Cheyenne, they shattered a record for a rapid temperature drop from 43F to 3F in just 30 minutes today, that is a quick moving front.
I’m sitting in the Seattle-Tacoma area since early this morning. Made a delivery and now picking up a load with two local area stops Thurs morning.
It was cold and slick coming in here this morning on I-5. I’m going to park tomorrow afternoon after my delivery to sit out a 34 reset to allow the winter storm moving in Thurs night/Friday morning to pass. Expected significant freezing rain and ice. Will warm up into to Saturday and rain several days.
The ice and high gusty winds scare me. Makes driving very stressful.
Not sure when Prime will find me a load out of this area with the holiday weekend
Yes. Waiting on a wrecker for the past two hours to winch me back off the soft shoulder onto the pavement near Coalville, UT on I-80 east. Snow, sleet, high winds....all except the arctic low temperatures so far.
Happy first day of Winter everyone!!!!
Stay safe out there friends! 💪🏻
Yes sir, I'm probably going to be calling off tomorrow and Friday, we are supposed to get winds of 30 mph with gusts of 50 with 5 or 6 inches of snow then temperatures of -5 with wind chills - 30 . I-65 is going to be a mess under those conditions
This is just a small portion of I-80 in Wyoming. Sitting on the on-ramp at the I-80/I-84 split at Echo. No sense going further with the roads closed.

Not just the Midwest is affected. I started out today just west of Columbus, OH and went through PA on 80. All the electronic signs warning of a winter storm starting Thursday AM. I checked the forecast for my destination in MA and it looks like rain starting there on Thursday PM.
This situation really motivated me to get as far as possible before the weather affects traffic. I made it to Milford, CN before shutting down 125 miles from my delivery. I should make it to Taunton tomorrow before the storm. Huge amount of the U.S.A. affected by this system.
Be safe fellow drivers!

Anybody else being affected by the winter storm currently hitting the Midwest?
I was scheduled to run Thursday and Friday but called in. Blizzard warning for most of Iowa north of I-80 into southern MN from Thursday at noon til 6am Saturday. It'll be whiteout conditions starting tonight but the wind is just barely below the blizzard threshold until tomorrow afternoon. Gusts 40 to 50 mph kick in tonight blowing the 4 to 6 inches of snow we're currently getting. I'll be very shocked if I-35 isn't shutdown. Last Friday it was extremely slick with zero visibility and weather was not even close to what they're forecasting this week. Wind chills could be lower than -40.
Numerous counties in my area have already pulled their plows and will not be on the road until Saturday morning unless they're needed to clean a path for emergency vehicles responding to a call. State patrol has said they won't be able to help drivers stranded and you'll be forced to ride it out in your vehicle. Yet I guarantee there will be no shortage of people on the road....
Thoughts?
