Really been wondering there would be any place to get some experience over in the Huntsville Alabama area.

I want to get the experience mainly as a dump truck driver because I plan to be a owner operator once I get the funds to do so.

Owner Operator:

An owner-operator is a driver who either owns or leases the truck they are driving. A self-employed driver.

Have you ever driven?

I’ve driven a tanker truck but it was under the weight requirement so I didn’t need a class B or tankers, it weighed about 25950 pounds.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

One step at a time, as in best to figure out IF you can drive, if you ENJOY driving, if it's a VIABLE career path, and if it's WORTH the investment of owner/operator vs. driving for someone else.

I feel confident that I can drive a big truck, I used to drive my dads western star dump truck, that’s pretty much when I fell in love with driving really other than the headaches of idiots on the road. But my dream is indeed to be owner op but first just trying to see if there are companies out there that’ll help out with gaining experience.

DAC:

Drive-A-Check Report

A truck drivers DAC report will contain detailed information about their job history of the last 10 years as a CDL driver (as required by the DOT).

It may also contain your criminal history, drug test results, DOT infractions and accident history. The program is strictly voluntary from a company standpoint, but most of the medium-to-large carriers will participate.

Most trucking companies use DAC reports as part of their hiring and background check process. It is extremely important that drivers verify that the information contained in it is correct, and have it fixed if it's not.

Are you planning on driving a dump truck and perhaps owning one eventually, or are you thinking about an 18 wheeler? Big difference in a career path between the two.

Waste Management hires drivers without experience to train.

Some cities hire sanitation employees without experience to train for driving positions.

With these types of jobs, it's a high likelihood that for at least a year or two, you may not do much driving, if any. Often employees with CDLs are hired to be helpers and you can fill in driving as needed. The permanent driving jobs go to those with the most experience. That's not 100% the case at all companies, and it can even vary from location to location within the same company.

Hours Of Service

HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.

Google “excavation”, “concrete delivery” and “building materials” in your area, see what hits you get, review their websites to see if they are hiring. Visit each of the companies in-person that appear as possibilities. Make connections in the local construction scene… you’ll find something.

Sanitation is also a viable option as previously suggested.

Good luck.

Awesome thanks everyone and also I’m taking small steps by getting experience before jumping into being owner opp, I still have much research to do before being owner op that way I don’t get stuck.

I did call waste management and the lady did say that they need at least a year worth of commercial driving experience.

I have found a couple that are class B that’ll hire me but I prefer not having to do package delivery’s like cola and dairy.
