Hey all! I've got a million questions and looking for some info! Any recommendations and suggestions are muchly appreciated!

My hubs and I have been seriously researching a career in OTR team driving together. We are very aware of all the pros and cons this can have. Our situation is this..... Our youngest (and only one left at home) will be graduating this May (2014) and gone off to college. My hubs has been stuck at his same job for what was only supposed to be 3 months has turned into 7 years with no room for pay growth or advancement. Myself, my job is meh..... I am a risk taker, I live for today, my hubs however is scared of the unknown.... So with that being said....

He has had his CDL for 10+ yrs but mostly city driving and local. Not much of truck and trailer or long haul. Myself, nothing at all! We have been looking into companies that have truck driver training, but there seems to be so many options. And now I'm confused! lol Can anyone suggest a company with the schooling? Do the companies with the school pay for the schooling (I understand we may have to sign a 1yr contract to drive for them after schooling is complete)? How does schooling work with husband/wife teams? Can we train together? What are the better school companies?

So that is the start of my questions....... I have a ton more but I'll save those for a few who have the time to answer! Thank you all in advance for your wisdom and thoughts! Be safe on the road and hope to cross paths with each of you some day soon!

Thanks, Amy

  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.

There are a few other ladies like Jana Banana and Mistelle that team with their significant other. You can inbox them. Thatbeing said most ccompanies love husband and wife teams. The company you want to go with is one that serves your needs. No one person needs are the same. I think Jana trained with her husband. Most companies dont do that but guess hers did. Im not a team so cant tell ya much in the way of that but any other questions I can try to help ya out. Ps Welcome Aboard.

Thank you RedGator! There is so much to read.... My head is spinning on the amount of research and information available, yet I still seem to have questions! This forum and site have been great as so many people have taken the time to blog their stories and experiences... We are still researching, trying to figure out what the best route for us is going to be.

Trixx......since your hubs has some experience, he could go with a company that has a cdl school...get his otr experience, and then become a trainer...and train you !! Thats done quite alot...you can ask that question of any recruiter that you talk to....make a list of questions...but temper it with the fact that until you and hubs prove yourselves as good, safe, honest drivers, you will be one of the hoard....But choose your company wisely...you will want to stay with them for atleast a year. After that...your "team" will be a sought after commodity at ANY company !!!

OOS:

When a violation by either a driver or company is confirmed, an out-of-service order removes either the driver or the vehicle from the roadway until the violation is corrected.
