I think you're spot on - a scam. It's like the millionaires/billionaires, politicians, and climate activists who brag that they buy carbon credits to offset their carbon footprint from flying their private jets and driving their fancy cars all around the world - they're still emitting carbon but they feel better about polluting )warm feelings). That's a concept that my logical mind cannot process.
I would have to say that's wrong. I want to make this clear... the following is my opinion. If anyone has facts that differ, I'd appreciate hearing from you.
The whole DEF system is part scam and part science. It doesn't produce harmless emissions, in fact they are pretty bad. What it does is eliminate black smoke. When people don't see that black smoke they somehow get warm feelings that make them feel they are saving the earth.
There is less carbon coming out of the exhaust pipe, but there is plenty of other bad fumes and gasses being emitted. By trapping the soot and then re-burning it at higher temperatures we eliminate the black smoke common from diesel engines. As far as producing "harmless" exhaust goes, we are a long way from that.

I guess yoinever read any of the things I've written for years about the DEF scam
Sorry to say I have not. Unless I skimmed through a post or 2 and didnt retain the info, Much to my regret.
With the condo style sleeper, I leave the two upper windows open, side windows closed, no trouble with fumes.
Worst exhaust I've dealt with is a hot-shot pickup, horrible!
I idle my truck most nights. If it's 40 or below outside I can sleep with the truck off. I don't sleep with my windows open. I need it cold to sleep. You should be able to bump the cruise control up to raise the idle and that should keep it running. My sleep is more important than the little bit of fuel burnt. I'm stopped right now and am resetting this weekend. I will idle my truck to watch my shows and turn it off to sleep. It's cold enough here tonight. Don't fret it, idle if you want to or need to. Best of luck to you and welcome to CFI.
I guess I’m one of the ones some don’t want to park next to, long nose Pete with an APU. I run it while parked so I don’t have to idle the big motor. I set my desired cabin temp and it does the rest for me.
As far as idling goes, it has been my experience the emissions systems don’t do well with it. As far as DEF being a scam, it is and was proven several years ago to be. The developer out in Ca was proved to be a complete fraud. Most rational people would have took a deep dive after that news came out, but nope they just kept pushing it. I find it a bit ironic the past couple years how they say the by product from the DEF is killing bees, harming out enviroment.
On tractor trailers, and APU is a small diesel engine that powers a heat and air conditioning unit while charging the truck's main batteries at the same time. This allows the driver to remain comfortable in the cab and have access to electric power without running the main truck engine.
Having an APU helps save money in fuel costs and saves wear and tear on the main engine, though they tend to be expensive to install and maintain. Therefore only a very small percentage of the trucks on the road today come equipped with an APU.
CFI does not have APUs.
