Thornton Illinois Quarry

Interstate 294 crosses over the Thornton Quarry at the eastern edge of Illinois. No doubt most of us have crossed it, probably multiple times.

This incredible landmark has fascinated me, so I Goggled the quarry and found that there is an abundance of information and many photos on the internet. They have aerial photos and videos showing exactly what is below you when you cross interstate 294. If you have never looked at this, take a look now and see how amazing it is.

I would love to go down in the quarry, but tours are only given two days per year, limited member of people and the tour is booked up for two years, so there is quite a waiting list.

So now I will have to be content to see what I can see from my truck as I go over this incredible quarry. It’s the second largest aggregate quarry in the world.

I've always wanted to base jump off that overpass.

BK, there's another large quarry in Elmhurst, IL. I don't know if it's a regular thing but I saw a tour offered there a couple years back. They filmed an episode of Chicago Fire there too.
