Work boots, jeans (with a belt), and a polo shirt. Nothing you wear should be stained or have any holes. Dress For Success!

This is something I wish trucking companies were able to do with perspective hires--an in-person interview. Many slobs could be weeded out beforehand. What do I mean? Look around the truck stops, shippers, receivers, and your terminals. It's an impossible idea for OTR though.

Shipper:

The customer who is shipping the freight. This is where the driver will pick up a load and then deliver it to the receiver or consignee.

Terminal:

A facility where trucking companies operate out of, or their "home base" if you will. A lot of major companies have multiple terminals around the country which usually consist of the main office building, a drop lot for trailers, and sometimes a repair shop and wash facilities.

OTR:

Over The Road

OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.

This has always worked for me. If not a polo shirt a nice button down shirt with jeans looks good too.

Hell, one time before I had my cdl I went to an interview for a driving position and wore a suit and tie. I stuck out like a sore thumb and we even joked about it in the interview but they were very impressed I would bring my A game to a simple interview like that. Funnily enough I was offered that job and ended up declining it and going to Swift to get my cdl and start driving rigs.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

It’s always refreshing to see a well dressed truck driver at a truck stop. Very professional. Look at the Walmart and UPS drivers. Just wear decent long pants and get a good haircut and shave (if applicable).

When I was in orientation for my current job, there was one guy who stood out like a sore thumb. A real slob. He lasted less than two weeks before he got fired because he was too lazy to make his deliveries on time. It was not surprising, based on his appearance.

Daily I wear jeans, and a button down company shirt with work boots. You can never get a second chance to make a good first impression.

For those that read this, appeareance matters to customers. If you dress proffessionally you will be treated better. Fact of life!!

HOS:

Hours Of Service

HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.
